Supporting someone who has difficulty looking after themselves is sometimes called caring. You are a carer if you provide (unpaid) practical or emotional help for a partner, child, relative or friend who has an illness, a
disability, a mental health problem, or an addiction.

Giving support and care like this can affect your own wellbeing. We encourage you to register as a carer even if you don’t think you need any help right now. Things can change quickly.

Contact your local carers service to register as an unpaid carer and to find out what support you can receive.

There is just one month to go until our Midnight Walk on Friday 10 July and we want you to be a part of it!

Join us as we make miles matter, shining a light on hospice care and our memories of loved ones.

Choose one of our four routes to take on, 2.5, 5, 7.5 or 13.5 miles and make it a night to remember.

Don't forget that it's the money you raise in sponsorship that really makes the difference to the patients who need our vital service at home and at our specialist unit at Turnchapel, 365 days a year.

Just think, if you and every single Midnight Walker commits to raising £100, the event will bring in enough for our St Luke’s teams to care for 100 families at home.

Sign up now and be a part of something amazing!

Caring is something most of us will experience at some point. Research from Carers UK and the Centre for Care suggests there is a 65% chance of us providing care during our adult lives.

In Plymouth there are over 23,900 unpaid carers supporting loved ones every day. An unpaid carer may support a family member, partner, friend or neighbour who is ill, disabled or needs extra help as they get older. For some, it’s a few hours a week. For others, it is constant.

Plymouth City Council and Improving Lives Plymouth have launched a new digital self‑help service to support carers of all ages in Plymouth.

Bridgit is designed to give you personalised guidance, practical information, and local support to help you in your caring role.

Here’s what it offers:

- Personalised Support: Choose the topics that matter to you and the app will instantly create a tailored support plan with practical advice, wellbeing tips, and information about local services.

- Stay Connected: The app sends regular check‑ins by email or text, offering reminders, encouragement, and extra support when you need it most.

You can access your support plan anytime, day or night. If you choose to register, you can save your progress and pick up where you left off at any time.

Our Guiding Lights Art Trail is starting next month and we want you to be a part of it!

We're inviting you to sponsor a star on our In‑Memory lighthouse ‘Supernova’. Create a glowing tribute that lets your loved one’s light shine on, whether or not they were touched by St Luke’s care.

Your special tribute names will each feature in their own hand-painted star. Supernova will be on display throughout the St Luke’s Guiding Lights art trail, so you will be able to visit and spot your loved one’s name. Once the trail ends, it will take permanent residence within our hospice grounds.

⭐ £50 to dedicate a large star
⭐ £25 to dedicate a medium star

This week is Carers UK Carers Week. This year’s theme, 'Building Carer Friendly Communities,' highlights the importance of creating places, services and communities where unpaid carers feel recognised, valued and supported.

In Plymouth, there are more than 23,000 unpaid carers providing vital support to loved ones, friends and neighbours every day. Many carers balance employment, family responsibilities and their own health needs while continuing to care for others, often without recognising themselves as carers or seeking support.

Many of the family members we meet may not even realise they are a carer and are therefore not accessing the support they may need.

As part of Carers Week, a range of wellbeing and social activities will take place across Plymouth led by Plymouth City Council and Improving Lives Plymouth, including walks, yoga, pamper sessions, creative workshops, coffee mornings and community events. These activities are designed to give carers time for themselves, opportunities to connect with others and access to valuable local support.
