Our Story

Mesothelioma is an asbestos related cancer for which there is currently no cure. Plymouth and the South West are hot spots for the disease with many cases emerging among former dockyard workers and labourers.

The South West Mesothelioma Support Group is based in Plymouth Devon. The group was established in 2011 to provide peer support for those affected by mesothelioma, but since December 2017, the group’s meetings have focused on providing friendship and support to those bereaved by mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases. The group also spreads asbestos and mesothelioma awareness and raises funds to facilitate the continued running of the group, the funding of a mesothelioma specialist nurse for the South West and to donate to national mesothelioma registered charities, local hospices, hospitals and other related causes.

The Cedar of Lebanon memorial tree at Saltram, which has become synonymous with the group, was originally planted by The Roger Lowe Asbestos Memorial Campaign on 27th February 2008 as a tribute to mesothelioma patients and families past, present and future.

Since then, the tree has grown just like the support group. Snowdrops were also planted around the tree and adopted by the group for their logo and also as a symbol of hope.
