Literacy in a Box Trust

Literacy in a Box Trust In addition to our core programme, School Aid 4 Zambia, we have shipped boxes to Zimbabwe, the Philippines, Ghana, Kenya, Nepal, Burkina Faso and South Africa.

http://www.literacyboxtrust.org.uk/ The Trust's priority is to give hope to the children of Sub-Saharan Africa that through education, they may work their way out of the twin challenges of AIDS and poverty However the provision of Literacy Boxes to Zambian schools remains the main focus of our operations. On average, a pupil working to the Zambian curriculum, will need around 30 exercise books in

the academic year, meaning a Primary school of 500 pupils would need 15,000 exercise books to cover the pupils school year. It would take 150 Literacy Boxes to manage the school's annual requirement for exercise books. Nationwide, it would take around 250,000 Literacy Boxes a year to give every Zambian child the basic materials just ONCE. Most schools require some financial contribution from pupils towards their education, meaning orphans and children of families in abject poverty, are unlikely to be able to go to school. We are totally a volunteer organisation with EVERY PENNY of any donation going towards the cost of creating and sending the Literacy Boxes. Feedback photos and video confirms the safe arrival of the boxes, giving peace of mind to all donors. Many UK schools support Literacy in a Box, not only as a charity in its own right, but also by using our School Video to help deliver the curriculum subject Understanding Overseas Cultures. It is humbling to see how 'giving' are our UK children as we have evidenced so many unbelievable projects undertaken by UK pupils to raise money for Literacy Boxes, so vital, if their Zambian counterparts are to have any chance of an education. As we celebrate our 20th International Literacy Day, two of which were actually in Zambia where we do most of our work, we reflect on the hundreds of orphans and thousands of poor children who have been able to have an education through the Literacy Box.

A THANK YOU and an URGENT PLEA! Firstly a huge THANK YOU to those Rotary Clubs and individuals who have supported the Taonga Humanitarian Project and so allow the first pair of latrines to be built. There is some funding in place towards the build of the final two latrines, which we hope to have built in the school's winter break ( our summer break ) of August. However ,we are just £1500 short of what we need so the URGENT PLEA is can you please help with a donation that would allow the latrines to be built during August? To discuss the most convenient way to donate, please make contact through our website https://literacyinabox.org.uk/ The photos show the original latrine for 600 children, then the first and second having been built. As we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the birth of Literacy in a Box, we also have photos of the latest consignment of Literacy Boxes arriving in Zambia. We know just how valuable are the boxes, as Sharon, an orphan of Chainda in Lusaka, received materials from the first Literacy Box sent to their community school. Throughout her primary and then secondary education, Literacy Box support continued. She trained to be a teacher and has returned to Chainda as a teacher to 'give back' in gratitude of the opportunity offered of an education through the Literacy Box. Please help us to help more orphans access an education. To donate please visit: literacyboxtrust.org.uk
