When did being small stop feeling mighty?

As someone who has worked in large charities and small ones, I often reflect on how different the funding landscape feels today.

Like many grassroots organisations, my week is not spent solely writing funding applications. I am delivering projects, supporting children, recruiting volunteers, collecting impact data, writing reports, organising events, managing partnerships and often doing countless practical jobs that keep everything running.

Yet funding applications increasingly require significant time, specialist knowledge and resources. Many larger charities have dedicated fundraising teams and bid writers. Small charities often do not. We are fitting funding applications around everything else.

What concerns me most is that some of the organisations closest to their communities can find themselves overlooked. We see needs emerge around us, build trusted relationships over years and deliver localised support, yet funding criteria and organisational thresholds can sometimes unintentionally favour larger organisations.

There is also a growing challenge when funding opportunities become so specific that charities responding directly to community need find themselves trying to squeeze essential work into predefined funding categories, which is not ideal or the way in which we should best serve our communities.

This is by no way a criticism of larger charities or funders. There are many examples of excellent partnership working and transformative grant-making. But it is a reminder that if we want thriving communities, we need a funding environment where grassroots organisations have a genuine opportunity to compete and be recognised for the impact they create.

Sometimes the smallest charities are doing some of the biggest work.

📖 A little sneak peek from Milo & Mila...

This page is one of our favourites.
As Milo and Mila set off to explore the different jobs and opportunities Plymouth has to offer, they're walking through a place that many of our local children know well, Stonehouse.

For some children, the streets, buildings and landmarks in this book are part of everyday life. They walk past them on the way to school, see them from their windows, or call this community home. That representation matters.

Milo & Mila isn't just a children's book. It's a book designed to help children dream big, explore possibilities, and see that exciting careers and opportunities can be found right here in Plymouth.

We wanted every child reading the story to recognise familiar places and feel that the future belongs to them too.

Here's a little snippet for those who haven't seen it yet. 👀✨

💭 What job would your child love to explore if they joined Milo and Mila on their adventure?

🌟 Young Person Spotlight: Albert

Last week, we welcomed Albert to the Millfields Inspired team for work experience.

During his placement, Albert supported research projects, learned more about marketing and digital engagement, and joined our Widening Horizons trip to EE to explore careers in technology.

When asked what he learned, Albert said he gained a better understanding of how Millfields Inspired supports local children and developed valuable research and presentation skills.

His favourite parts of the week?

- Painting with the team

- Visiting EE

Reflecting on the EE visit, Albert said:

"It was a wonderful and well informed trip and it helped me understand the variety of opportunities."

He described the experience in three words:

"Important. Exciting. Technological."

And his advice to other young people considering work experience?

"It is more important than they may think."

Thank you, Albert, for all your hard work and enthusiasm. We wish you every success in the future! 🚀

👉 Are you a business that could offer a young person work experience, mentoring or a workplace visit? We'd love to hear from you. Together, we can help inspire the next generation.

It was wonderful to welcome John Hepburn from The Island Trust, one of our valued partners, and present him with Silver Ambassadors Certificate in recognition of the Trust's ongoing support and commitment to our work.

The Island Trust provides sea related experiences for children and young people, helping them to build confidence, resilience, teamwork and independence through adventures at sea. Over the years, Millfields Inspired has been proud to work alongside The Islands Trust, creating opportunities that broaden horizons and inspire children to believe in their potential.

We are delighted that, in October, a group of children from Whitleigh Primary School will have the opportunity to sail aboard one of the Trust's vessesls, taking part in what promises to be an unforgettable experience that will help them develop new skills, overcome challenges and create lasting memories.

🐻✨Introducing Milo and Mila - Dream Big Little Bears✨🐻

We're delighted to officially introduce Milo and Mila - Dream Big Little Bears, a very special children's book created by Millfields Inspired.

This project has been a true community collaboration:
- Written by Keely Burch
- Brought to life by an illustration student Ewa Orchard form Arts University Plymouth
- Inspired by the real people, places and opportunities found around Union Street and Plymouth City Centre

What makes this book so special is that the story and illustrations are based on the area many of the children we work with know and call home. From familiar streets and local landmarks to the jobs, people and opportunities that exist around them, Milo and Mila help children see that exciting futures can start right on their own doorstep.

By reflecting their own community in the pages of the book, we're helping children connect with the world around them, build confidence and recognise that their dreams are achievable, wherever they come from.

This book is a wonderful example of how creativity, education and community can come together to inspire the next generation.

We'd also like to say a special thank you to Adapt Graphics for their support in helping bring Milo and Mila – Dream Big Little Bears to life. From supporting the production process to printing the finished books, their generosity and commitment have helped ensure this story can be shared with children across our community.

💬 We'd love to know: What did you dream of becoming when you were a child?
