Does rewilding make wildfires worse? 🌱🔥

In our latest blog, our CEO, Nick Bruce-White, sets the record straight on the false claims that rewilding increases wildfire risk, and explains why restoring natural processes is so important.

For more than 150 years, we have drained wetlands, straightened rivers and removed temperate rainforests and Culm grasslands, reducing our landscapes’ ability to naturally hold water.

By restoring these natural processes we can create healthier, more resilient landscapes, safer from wildfires, drought and flooding, while providing huge benefits for wildlife and society.

Do you live near Central Park and want to help water the trees in the Family Tree Field?

Our Tree Wardens will be there on Monday morning from 8am for an hour or so to water the very thirsty trees!

If you can help, please do!

(It doesn't currently look green and nice like this by the way!)

Great to see some rain in Plymouth, which fell last night. It felt like a lot but it has only penetrated the soil by about 1/2 an inch.

Tree roots are lower than this so this rain won't have helped at all.

Please continue to water the trees!

Remember our big planting day at Pasley St Pocket Park?

Well we have a message from Stoke in Bloom ...

Many Plymouth Tree People volunteers came to help plant these trees back in February, so we thought we would invite you back to have a look at how they are getting on, as we give them a mulching this Saturday 💚

We'd love a few extra pairs of hands to help us spread it around the trees if you have an hour to spare on Saturday between 2-3, or if you just want to come and have a look at how the area has grown this summer, and chat, please do!

We will have biscuits and tea available - and some cold drinks too.

Plymouth tree rescue moves forward after funding boost 🌳

Great that Plymouth Live has helped to share our campaign to encourage people to water trees near where they live.

We appreciate there is a hose pipe ban and we don't want anyone breaking the law, but you are allowed to water your gardens or trees anywhere with a watering can. A young tree can really benefit from 10 litres, but the more the merrier.

Many people in comments on Plymouth Live suggested that they didn't think residents should have to water the trees, that it's the Council's job.

Of course the Council are responsible for the trees and if a conversation needs to be had about their capacity then it should happen, but maybe that can wait.

While it's urgent, if people can do what they can to help, that would be amazing. They are the Council's trees, but they are also our trees. They belong to us all and we want them to survive.

Some tips here from The Tree Council on watering trees during a drought.

The situation is so bad now, we expect many trees to die over the next few years due to the stress on trees from this summer and last summer.

Please help if you can!

Notice how the trees in your park and on your street look. If they are droopy, crispy or losing leaves then they need a drink.

A 10 litre watering can costs less than 3p to fill but why not collect water from your bath or shower to put on the trees?
