I love country music. My friend knows little about it. So when we headed to see The Ballad of Johnny & June at Theatre Royal Plymouth, we were curious to see whether this new musical could win us both over.

The verdict? Outstanding musicians, remarkable vocals and a surprisingly moving love story that stayed with us long after the curtain call.

This isn't a tribute concert or a singalong. It's the story behind the songs, told through the eyes of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash's son, and by the end there were more than a few emotional moments.

Read our full review and find out why Christopher Ryan Grant's portrayal of Johnny Cash left such a lasting impression. The show runs until Saturday 20 June, so there's still time to catch it for yourself.

This weekend, Plymouth’s fishing heritage, community creativity and a very special local story come together on Commercial Wharf.

Ahead of The Gansey Gathering Sardine Festival, What’s On Plymouth Culture Reporter and Fashion Designer Victoria Lammie caught up with Karen and Fiona Evans from The Conscious Sisters CIC to talk about Ganseys, sardines, sustainability, working class heritage and why Plymouth’s connection to the sea is so worth celebrating.

The result is a brilliant In Conversation that takes you behind the scenes of the project, from researching Plymouth’s own Gansey pattern to bringing together a community of knitters and uncovering the story of the sardines that saved Plymouth.

Then, this Saturday, you can experience it for yourself.

The Gansey Gathering Sardine Festival takes place on Saturday 20 June, 11am to 4pm, on Commercial Wharf, The Barbican, with a parade of Gansey knitters, sustainable crafts, sea shanties, heritage walks, seaweed tasting, community performances, Gansey knitting and free sardines.

A new exhibition at KARST invites Plymouth audiences to look at the coast in a completely different way.

Faunal Succession is the first institutional UK exhibition by Venezuelan artist Lucía Pizzani, bringing together installation, sculpture, painting and sound to explore fossils, chalk, migration, climate change and identity.

Opening at KARST in Stonehouse on Thursday 11 June, the exhibition connects Plymouth’s relationship with the sea to much bigger questions about history, belonging and change.

There will also be an exhibition walk-through with the artist on Friday 12 June, plus Curator’s Tours on 26 June and 24 July.

Find out what it is, why it matters and why this major exhibition is coming to Plymouth.

Live music is taking over Plymouth this weekend.

Rowlee on the Radio is back with another local gig guide in partnership with Plymouth Culture, and this week there is a brilliant mix of gigs across the city and beyond.

A big highlight is Live at the Amphitheatre Plymouth City Centre this Saturday 13 June, bringing live music, dancing and family friendly fun to the new Amphitheatre in Armada Way from 3pm.

The afternoon starts with music from Evelyn Shaw, one of Plymouth Culture’s young person artist competition winners, followed by a free swing dance workshop with Mad About Swing and high octane gypsy swing from The Rin Tins.

Then from 7pm, the music continues at the Moxy Hotel on Millbay Road for the official afterparty, with local singer Richard James bringing stripped back vibes, rich vocals and some of the greatest hits.

Across the rest of the weekend, you can also catch The 3rd Wheel at Thistle Park Tavern, Funky Munks at Annabel’s, Harry Baker at Barbican Theatre, Daddy Long Legs at Hyde Park Social Club, Eton Mess, The Other Woman and The Horizons at The Junction, The Sunday Sermon jazz jam at Cafébar Momus and The Marvels at Steel Brew.

Plenty of great music to enjoy out and about this weekend. Read the full Plymouth Culture gig guide and support live music in the city: https://www.plymouthculture.co.uk/whats-on/news/dont-miss-plymouths-live-music-happening-across-the-city-this-weekend

Joy. Electricity. Fire. Redemption.

The Ballad of Johnny & June comes to Theatre Royal Plymouth this month, bringing the legendary love story of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash to the stage through music, humour and heart.

We caught up with Christopher Ryan Grant and Christina Bianco to talk about stepping into these iconic roles, finding the real people behind the legend, and why this story still connects so deeply with audiences today.

From the songs people already know and love to the playful, human moments that shaped Johnny and June’s relationship, this is a show full of energy, honesty and emotion.
