Sea Moor Explore Providing young people with chances to participate in adventurous outdoor activities Who are we? What do we offer?

We are a volunteer led club who aim to provide young
people with chances to participate in adventurous
activities in the great outdoors with other like-minded
young people. We hope to inspire them to undertake
escapades of their own, and to promote and
encourage personal development through
engagement in these activities. We have half termly trips out to the moors, river, lakes,
beaches, coastline

and woodland to climb, surf, sail,
walk and cycle etc. These events are for pupils of
secondary and sixth form age who wish to share
challenging outdoor activities with people of their own
age. Recent activities have included stand up
paddleboarding, kayaking, skiing, coasteering and
climbing. We also train and enter teams into Ten Tors
in all three distances.

Coasteering 7th June 2026

On a slightly overcast June Sunday, SME enjoyed a morning of coasteering. With fantastic leadership from Simon and Eddie of North Devon Coasteering 12 young SME members, plus SME Pete, had an exciting morning exploring the coastline of North Devon. Starting from Hele Bay the team swam, scrambled and jumped their way around Fishing Rock to Beacon Point. The adventure included a run down “kamikaze” and concluded with a thrilling 7m jump off Blythe Rock!! All had a fantastic time and were totally stoked with the fun time they had. The instructors Simon and Eddie were really impressed with SME teams enthusiasm and determination as everyone threw themselves into the challenging adventure. Once again a big thanks to North Devon Coasteering for being excellent and for Jane Simmonds for organising the event.

Simon from ND Coasteering emailed afterwards and said: "The kids were absolutely amazing today, whatever you are doing with them, please keep doing it as they are so confident! They had quite a lot of swell pumping through the route and took it all on, with big smiles and confidence, it was awesome to see."

We think our members are awesome too!

Ten Tors Challenge 2026

A 35, 45 or 55 mile self-supported walking challenge that takes place over 2 days on Dartmoor National Park. But it is so much more than that.

Our teams of six young people aged from 13 to 19 start training in October and spend the autumn and winter traipsing over the moorland honing their navigation, campcraft, leadership, teamwork and oh so many interpersonal skills in order to complete the challenge.

This year we had a 45 and 55 mile team who successfully completed the challenge.

Our 45 milers smashed our expectations and completed their challenge faster than any previous SME 45 mile team, returning to the Okehampton Army Camp before lunch time on Sunday. The team was made up with young people from Chulmleigh College, South Molton College, Park School and Ivybridge College. They came together over the winter and during the challenge demonstrated the importance of teamwork to help each other over the line as they supported a team mate who struggled to carry his load.

Our 55 mile team epitomised the definition of resilience. Over the course of the training season many of the team dropped out because of the demands placed upon the lives of 16 to 18 year olds. I am sure those that were left questioned whether they would have a team that could actually make it to the start line. Our team finally came together for the last two training camps and it required a huge amount of self belief and determination for them to bond together to complete the challenge. To quote GB cyclist Katie Archibald in her retirement announcement yesterday, "how much further we travel when we go together". I have no doubt they completed the 55 mile challenge because they did it together.

Huge congratulations go to all those who completed the challenge and our thanks go to all the Sea Moor Explore volunteers and committee who enable our young people to have these adventures.

18 members had a great day at Plymouth ski centre learning to both snowboard and ski. The more advanced skiers had the main slope to themselves for the morning whilst the beginners developed their skills with instructors on the nursery slope. An excellent morning was had by all.

Surfing at Westward Ho!

Sunday 12 October saw 19 members of Sea Moor Explore have a fantastic 2 hours down at Westward Ho! with Harry, Emma and Tommy from The North Devon Surf School . The session started with some games on shore before moving into the sea for more relay races to get everyone warmed up ready to hit the surf.

The sea was a balmy 16c and with the turning tide a nice pulse of swell started to come through allowing everyone to catch some nice clean waves.

Many thanks go to Pete Covington for organising the event and North Devon Surf school for a fantastic session.

On Sunday 28th of September 15 of our members headed to Plymouth for a guided snorkeling session with the Ocean Conservation Trust. Their marine biologists took members on a snorkel safari around the rocks off Mount Batten beach. Despite the chilly water, everyone had a great time exploring along the rocks and amongst the kelp.

Congratulations to our fantastic Sea Moor trainees who completed their mock Ten Tors Challenge event this weekend. The trainees walked independently for the majority of the day and were checkpointed across the moor. With low cloud and mist shrouding the moor, the navigators had to work hard to keep the teams on track.

It was impressive to see the teams arriving at our chosen wild camp location, quickly and efficiently getting tents set up and cookers going. Teamwork is absolutely essential in these situations and everyone got stuck in to the tasks to ensure they could settle down quickly for the night. Refueling and recovery is so important when you have to get up and do it all over again the next day!

Our 35 and 45 mile teams completed virtually the whole distance they will need to do on the event weekend. What a fantastic achievement! Depleted in numbers because of injury and illness our 55 milers joined in with the 45s.

We now have a break in training over the Easter Holidays and return for a final camp at the end of April.

Ten Tors Training 2025 - 35, 45 and 55 mile teams.

Congratulations to our 35 milers who completed their third camp - but their first wild camp - on Dartmoor recently. They were fortunate to have clear skies and great visibility which enabled them to navigate pretty flawlessly across the moor. It was a chilly night but it meant we had a great sunset and sunrise. The group worked really well as a team, supporting and encouraging one another as they covered nearly 30 miles.

Our two 45 mile teams enjoyed the sunny weekend on Dartmoor for their second camp. Covering about 40 miles over the weekend they showed they are strong and fit for the Ten Tors Challenge which is now less than two months away. Training has progressed well and each trip on to the moor gives them a chance to tweak the kit that they need, practice navigation and develop the important bonds that help them work well together as a team.

Training for the 55 mile Ten Tors Challenge at this time of year often means walking from before sunrise to after sunset in order to cover the miles needed to prepare the body for the distances it needs to walk. Our 55 mile team meet the challenge with determination but it doesn't mean it's not hard! The clear skies and sunshine are a boost to moral - and certainly make it easier to navigate over the moor!

Congratulations to all of our teams and we look forward to seeing you all again next weekend for the Mock event.
