Developing your own art style often starts with the inspiration you take from the work you have studied and appreciated. That’s why studying other artists is such an important part of the process.

At this week’s workshop, we explored painting in the style of Julien Merrow-Smith, a British artist based in Provence in the south of France. Our workshops are held twice per month, Wednesdays 7-9pm. Get in touch if you’d like to join us!

We mixed things up in this week’s workshop - part buy and sell for art materials and books, part still life study using the art wares as inspiration. Kill two birds with one stone! There was a plant and a teapot thrown in there somewhere as well.🌱

Our workshop this week was a still life study of a candle-lit scene. This gave loads of opportunity to look at contrast between shadow/highlights and dark/light tones, alongside atmosphere and mood. Our workshops run twice a month. Get in touch if you’d like to join us!

From Spring to Autumn, we meet weekly to create art plein-air, in locations in and around Plymouth. These sessions are open to all - you don’t have to be a member of Plymouth Arts Club to come along! Our workshop this week was a light-hearted look at cartoons, caricature, comic art and associated illustrative techniques, led by Mark Hannon. Mark took us through some concepts around the definition of cartoon art and set some fun tasks for us to complete. We also looked at how caption adds context. If you’d like to try one of our workshops, which are focussed around a varied range of artistic subjects, get in touch! We meet on Wednesdays 7-9.

In our workshop this week, we painted a still life, set-up to paint in the saturated colour style of the artist Peter Graham. We run a varied workshop programme, so drop us a message if you’d like to come along!

At our latest workshop, we welcomed watercolourist Neil Mawdsley for an engaging demonstration focused on capturing a Mediterranean scene.

Neil walked us through some of his approaches to composition, colour harmony, and light — offering valuable insight into the techniques behind his style.
