Thank you to our member Steve Ladds, who recently led a workshop exploring the possibilities of graphite.

We looked at a range of techniques and put them into practice through portrait, still life and landscape studies, exploring tone, texture, shading and detail.

This week’s still life setup at Plymouth Arts Club. A mix of patterned fabrics, antique furniture, ceramics and warm lighting made for an interesting challenge, with plenty of texture, colour and contrasting surfaces to work from. This Wednesday, we welcomed external tutor Karen Austin for a watercolour workshop, exploring a technique for painting flowers.

Rather than mixing colours, the paints were used quite dry and built up in delicate layers to create depth, tone and detail. Karen began with a demonstration of the method before providing guidance and supervision as everyone had a go themselves. If you’d like to come along to one of our workshops, get in touch!

Plein Air Meet Ups

We meet up on Saturdays throughout the summer months to get out into the fresh air and paint plein-air.

Our Saturday meet-ups are relaxed, fand open to everyone, so whether you’re an experienced artist or just fancy giving it a go, you’re very welcome to join us.

This weeks’ workshop at Plymouth Arts Club celebrated the centenary of Claude Monet’s death.

Inspired by the gardens and lily pond at Giverny, members created their own Monet-inspired artworks in a variety of media. Wonderful to see such a great range of interpretations! We meet on Wednesdays 7-9pm. Get in touch if you’d like to join us!

Another enjoyable session this week, working from a still life arrangement of carpentry tools. With interesting shapes, textures and surfaces, there was plenty to work from.

It was a different kind of art session this week — painting from a live guitar performance, by Michael Nelson Martin.

It was interesting to see how everyone responded to the music in their own ways.

Developing your own art style often starts with the inspiration you take from the work you have studied and appreciated. That’s why studying other artists is such an important part of the process.

At this week’s workshop, we explored painting in the style of Julien Merrow-Smith, a British artist based in Provence in the south of France. Our workshops are held twice per month, Wednesdays 7-9pm. Get in touch if you’d like to join us!
