CASS+ Each month, we support about 130 people in crisis as they go through court in Devon & Cornwall & into life beyond.

We give free, confidential, practical help & emotional support. We find solutions to complicated situations & guide towards positive change. Our system does not always address the root causes of crime. Anyone can end up at court alone, feeling powerless, trapped and terrified. CASS+ is independent of the system, perfectly-placed inside Magistrates’ Courts in Exeter, Newton Abbot, Plymouth, Bodmin

and Truro. We listen and give free practical advice; emotional support; and ongoing help for as long as they want us with them. We can reduce the risk of re-offending by working with our partners to find solutions to the complicated situations people face, especially when it comes to:

… spiralling financial hardship and debt
… homelessness and accommodation
… general wellbeing
… domestic abuse
… substance use
… mental health, including depression and anxiety
… literacy issues
… general court support
… education, training and employment

🌱It was great to meet with young people at HMP Channings Wood Prison yesterday - a valuable opportunity to talk about the support available to help them build a positive future following release.

It was also really encouraging to meet other organisations & services who share our goal of supporting people away from crime & towards a more settled, positive life 🙌

🎧 Well worth a listen: The Great Crime Mystery on BBC Radio 4 is an investigative series hosted by former BBC Home Editor, Mark Easton, exploring why public perception of crime is at odds with the official statistics📊

📉He explores the dramatic fall in crime in England and Wales, down roughly 80% over 30 years. He asks why the public still thinks crime is rising, and why politicians rarely celebrate the long-term decline, fearing they may be seen as ‘soft on crime’.

📣In Devon & Cornwall, we’ll keep working with all our partners to reduce offending by getting people the help they need to address the underlying causes.

🌟 Huge thank you to Elaine, our Asda Champion in Newton Abbot. She's been far-sighted enough to donate hats, gloves & socks for the many people we expect to see at court & struggling with the cold this winter (admittedly, that does seem a long we off right now 🫠). Your kindness makes a real difference🙏💙

📣 New episodes of Behind the Crime just launched on BBC Radio 4.

Each year, nearly 100,000 people go to prison. But what drives someone to commit a crime, and what can be done to prevent this from happening again?

In Behind the Crime, forensic psychologists, Dr Sally Tilt and Dr. Kerensa Hocken, speak with people who have received court sentences to explore what led them to cause harm, and, crucially, what it takes to break the cycle and prevent this from happening again.
