CASS+ Each month, we support about 130 people in crisis as they go through court in Devon & Cornwall & into life beyond.

We give free, confidential, practical help & emotional support. We find solutions to complicated situations & guide towards positive change. Our system does not always address the root causes of crime. Anyone can end up at court alone, feeling powerless, trapped and terrified. CASS+ is independent of the system, perfectly-placed inside Magistrates’ Courts in Exeter, Newton Abbot, Plymouth, Bodmin and Truro. We listen and give free practical advice; emotional support; and ongoing help for as long as they want us with them. We can reduce the risk of re-offending by working with our partners to find solutions to the complicated situations people face, especially when it comes to:

… spiralling financial hardship and debt
… homelessness and accommodation
… general wellbeing
… domestic abuse
… substance use
… mental health, including depression and anxiety
… literacy issues
… general court support
… education, training and employment

If you want to understand more about the issues we sometimes face at court, the BBC’s Time brings public attention to the circumstances that lead people into the justice system. Also, hope for the possibility of change for these young men.

It demonstrates the need for charities like ours who work so hard to provide practical, emotional & social support in helping people build more settled lives.

💬 Behind every statistic is a person, a family and a story. Poverty can affect anyone, and its impact can be far-reaching - including for people who find themselves caught up in the justice system.

💡 This Challenge Poverty Week, we’re shining a light on the barriers it creates, while celebrating our many partners in Devon and Cornwall working towards a fairer future.

We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a safe, secure and settled life.

⚖️We're calling for more support for people with autism and / or ADHD throughout the justice system. Around 2 – 5% of adults in the general population have ADHD. And yet, studies suggest that ADHD may be present in approximately 30% of adult male prisoners.

We fully support the call for a new autism strategy to deliver change for neurodiverse people. The Ministry of Justice recognises the importance of improving support for people with autism and ADHD. Furthermore, the government has a plan to train magistrates and legal advisers on fair treatment in court.

💬'People are less likely to offend when there is more understanding and awareness of their needs. Also, it’s vital that they are connected to the right support. In court, they need clear communication and reasonable adjustments. This results in benefits to both the individual and the wider criminal justice system.' 💬Rachel Hammond, Assistant Coordinator, Newton Abbot Magistrates' Court.
