For our meeting in February 2025, members were treated to an evening of seated exercise, led by our very own committee member, Sue Burton.

Sue had us warming up, stretching, reaching, co-ordinating arms and legs (no mean feat for some of us !) and then relaxing. The session ended with a game of passing bean bags - was it to the left or was it to the right, was it under the left leg, or under the right leg? Which meant that we all ended up rolling with laughter, thank you so much for a fabulous evening Sue.

On Tuesday 11th June, Briscoe Pitsea Womens Institute celebrated their 36th birthday, and our wonderful hard working committee arranged an Ascot themed birthday party for us. Members threw themselves into the spirit of Ladies Day by wearing their best dresses, teamed with stunning hats and fascinators.

We had the excellent Marie to entertain us with her singing, and she got everyone up on the floor dancing.

Although it was evening, we were served an afternoon tea during the break, before Marie treated us to her second half. I think she was amazed at how many members joined in with the dancing, including at one time, forming a chain around the hall for the locomotion.

A grand evening was had by all, and we applaud our committee for the many thoughtful Ascot touches (horses everywhere!) with each table being named after a racecourse.

We held a craft evening at our November meeting, where members could join in with a choice of activities.

Maria Jones demonstrated how to make a Christmas floral arrangement, Elaine Horwood showed us how to make very creative Christmas cards which members proudly took home with them, and Sue Beaird showed how to make a stitched Christmas card. Brenda Gowers brought lots of materials to make a Christmas wreath and you can see by the photos, just how many were completed on the night.

The evening was very much enjoyed, and thank you so much to all our demonstrators who helped make the evening a great success.

Remembrance Day is upon us again, and our Stitch n Bitch group have once again put on a wonderful display of poppies, for those who use our lovely hall and for those who pass by.

We had help from one of the hubbies who did the heavy lifting when fitting the Lest We Forget piece, and we hope you enjoy the photos of us having fun in fixing the wreaths to the gates and railings.

Another wonderful group effort.

This is a very belated post celebrating our birthday party in June. Our President, Linda Geary, came up with the ingenious idea of making it into a children’s party and she did all of the organising herself, so that everything was a surprise to members.

We started with pass the balloon between the legs game, having formed three teams, which had everyone in stitches, followed by musical statues which was won by Lynn Mott. Pass the parcel with forfeits and the parcel passed to the next person with great gusto was a firm favourite.

To take part in the next game you had to roll a six on a dice first, then quickly don a hat, apron and gloves in order to cut chocolate into squares with a knife which is not as easy as it sounds. You had to complete the task before the next person threw a six, if you didn’t, then you were out and the next person took over.

We paused between games for jelly and ice cream, soft drinks and cupcakes with the obligatory singing of Happy Birthday when the President produced a cake lit with candles.

Having all brought a wrapped gift we were then each handed a gift as though it was from another WI member. At the end of the party, in true kiddie style, we were all given a child’s goody bag and a gift box

Linda Geary had really done herself proud with all the organizing, for which she was thanked by all.
