Pinner Local History Society

Pinner Local History Society Pinner Local History Society was set up to promote an interest in history related to the Pinner area. We organise visits to places of historical interest.

Pinner Local History Society was set up in 1972 to promote an interest in history with special reference to Pinner and its environs – the historic parish of Pinner included the areas now known as Pinner Green, Hatch End, Headstone, North Harrow and Rayners Lane. We hold regular meetings with speakers on a range of topics relating to local history. Visitors and prospective new members are very welc

ome (suggested donation £3). We publish a Newsletter three times a year with information about the Society’s recent activities, reports of talks and outings, and pictures and research by members.

On Thursday, 4th June, the Pinner Local History Society Talk is Pinner’s Roads to London and the Pinner Turnpike by Thamar MacIver at 8.00pm in the Pinner Village Hall. Visitors are always welcome, suggested donation £3. Pinner people have gone to and from London for centuries but 18th- and 19th-century records reveal hazards ranging from muddy roads, floods and highwaymen. One response was turnpiking. Local people promoted legislation to transfer a section of road to trustees, who would finance improvements and recover their costs through tolls. Thamar’s talk will explore how the system affected locals, including road users, the trustees (who met at The Queen’s Head) and the families who lived at the tollgates and collected the tolls.

The next Pinner Local History Society Talk is Pinner’s Roads to London and the Pinner Turnpike by Thamar MacIver on 4th June at 8.00pm in the Pinner Village Hall. Visitors are always welcome, suggested donation £3. Before there was tarmac - or railways - people needed half-way decent roads to get about and for transporting goods. A challenge on London clay. As late as 1894, Pinner's roads were said to be "impassable for mud for five months out of twelve". Turnpiking - establishing sections of toll road and so making road users, rather than local communities, fund improvements to through routes - seemed the magic bullet. After all, everyone else was doing it. But was it such a good idea on a relatively quiet route? This talk will explore what changing systems of road management meant to the local people who ran and used the road.
