The 2026 Pewsey Carnival is in full swing with lots more events over the next couple of weeks. If you'd like to get involved on Thursday 17th September for the Wheelbeero event or on Saturday 19th September for the Carnival Procession, then just contact [email protected] or message the Pewsey Carnival-Chairman page on Facebook.
We did marshalling at the Carnival Procession last year and it was great fun! And you get a ringside spot too!

The hill picked out by the somewhat ethereal sunlight on an otherwise grey morning is Easton Clump - a prominent hilltop beech copse and ancient round barrow, perched on the ridge of Easton Hill, a few miles east of Pewsey, above the village of Easton Royal.

But why Royal?

The answer is rather charming. The “Royal” was added as the result of a Victorian-era historical misunderstanding - a mistake that, it seems, proved too good a name to lose! In 1836, the vicar of Bedwyn mistakenly described Easton’s church benefice as “royal”, apparently believing it to be a royal donative. The name subsequently stuck.

There is, however, an intriguing twist. Although the “Royal” in the village’s name was technically a mistake, Easton may well have had genuine royal connections in earlier times. It may have formed part of the large royal estate of Wootton around the time of the Domesday survey, while the village’s history was also closely connected with Savernake Forest, which was itself a royal hunting forest.

And, appropriately enough, Easton Royal is also home to The Bruce Arms - making it a rather lovely spot to pause, enjoy the landscape and perhaps raise a glass to its unexpectedly royal history. 🍺🌳

📚 A book for one of our readers 📚

Every now and again, something interesting lands on my desk through Alan’s Almanac, and occasionally I have the opportunity to pass something on to someone who’ll appreciate it.

This time it’s a copy of The Creative Container Garden by Anders Røyneberg, with Erik Schjerven, a rather lovely book packed with ideas for creating year-round displays of flowers, food, herbs, and more.

I’d like to send this copy to one of our followers.

🌱 To be in with a chance, follow the page and leave a comment below telling me: what’s your favourite thing to grow in a pot or container?
I’ll draw a name at random at the end of the month and contact the winner.🏆

And, if you know someone else with green fingers who might enjoy what we do here, do point them in our direction.
