DRIVEN BY COMMUNITY, POWERED BY VOLUNTEERS: THE TRUTH BEHIND OUR MOBILE HUB JOURNEY! 🚌✨
We’ve noticed a bit of discussion on local notice boards recently regarding our community bus. While we always welcome genuine curiosity about our progress, we want to clear up the facts, share the true timeline, and highlight the incredible journey behind this project.
Positive Community Action (PCA) is a fully registered, non-profit Community Interest Company (CIC). We don't trade or receive taxable income, and we don't sell anything. Every single grant, donation, or ounce of goodwill we receive is legally asset-locked and heavily regulated to ensure it goes directly into serving the Pewsey Vale, Marlborough, and surrounding villages.
To suggest that funds are put into "failed projects" completely ignores the massive, regulated, and undeniable impact our 50+ current volunteers have delivered right to your doorsteps since 2020:
🍲 9,090+ NUTRITIOUS HOME-COOKED MEALS cooked and delivered to the most vulnerable members of our community to combat malnutrition.
📦 1,251 FOOD & HOUSEHOLD SUPPLY PARCELS delivered directly to local families suffering from financial hardship.
🤝 3,662 PEOPLE SUPPORTED through our Basic Universal Resource Plan (BURP) boxes to fight rural food poverty.
☕ 3,632 FRIENDSHIP CAFES & FREE COMMUNITY MARKETS held to completely alleviate loneliness and rural social isolation.
💬 8,606 TIMES local people have stepped out of chronic isolation by attending our cafés.
🗺️ 337 TOTAL VOLUNTEERS who have stepped up to take action for PCA since our inception.
THE BUS IS NOT JUST A VEHICLE, IT’S A JOURNEY FOR MENTAL HEALTH
Transforming a massive double-decker bus into a professional mobile hub entirely through volunteer power takes time and meticulous planning. But for us, the bus has never been just a means to an end.
For the past few years, the very act of building this bus has been actively helping local people out of isolation and into volunteering. Working alongside professionals, our volunteers are learning valuable new skills, which has a massive, positive impact on personal wellbeing and mental health. The community spirit and healing being built INSIDE the bus during construction is just as vital as the services it will deliver once it becomes a community hub and is out on the road visiting different locations.
Because we believe in complete transparency, we share regular updates right here on our page and on our website. There is no "missing bus", just a dedicated, long-term project that is actively changing lives before it even begins its travels.
THE ACTUAL TIMELINE & FACTS:
🗓️ THE HISTORY: We did indeed buy the bus back in 2021 under our original PCCA banner. When we transitioned into a registered CIC and became PCA in February 2022, we took the time to ensure all planning, safety regulations, and legal work were done properly.
🛠️ THE PROGRESS: Massive milestones have been hit. The downstairs is now completely finished, featuring a full kitchen layout, serving hatch, and climate-controlled storage for our food rescue operations. After undergoing its full mechanical repairs, MOT, and taxation, the bus is now securely stationed on private land near Pewsey for its final interior stages.
📦 ACTIVE STORAGE USE RIGHT NOW: The bus is already working hard for us behind the scenes! Our space at the hall simply isn't big enough for everything we need to store to keep our operations running smoothly, so the completed downstairs area is actively being utilised for essential storage right now.
⚡ WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW UPSTAIRS: Our volunteers are currently working hard on the top deck fit-out, including carpentry for our upstairs Friendship Café area and admin office, alongside a sustainable 24V solar system and diesel heating so it’s cosy year-round.
🌱 EXCITING FUTURE PLANS: LONGER TERM RESILIENCE HUB
We are also thrilled to share that we are actively collaborating with Wiltshire Council to secure land local to Pewsey and Marlborough! This land will establish a brand new community farming project, where the bus will serve a vital role as our central resilience hub.
This exciting initiative will see volunteers engaging in growing, prepping, cooking, and serving fresh food alongside our ongoing surplus food collection. It is a massive step forward that will allow us to teach true sustainability directly to the community, mapping the entire journey from field, rescue, right to the plate.
We don't operate from the bus just yet apart from our office for admin, but our goal remains to get it launched and out visiting various communities this year!
Until then, our focus remains firmly on delivering our vital weekly services, like our morning Foodshare at Wesley Hall, Pewsey, everyday (apart from our days off at the hall on Wednesday and Sunday when we collect surplus from local supermarkets) from 10 am (remember to bring your own bags!).
Thank you to everyone who sees through the noise and stands with us. If you have carpentry skills, want to join the Bus team, or want to view our full transparent updates, please visit OURPCA.uk/Our-Community-Bus
🚨 NOTE ON STATS: These figures represent our officially calculated totals up to the end of April, and our incredible volunteer teams are already well ahead of these numbers as we speak!
