"SAVE THE COUNTRYSIDE A littered landscape is a shame to England."
Thus wrote Reg Gammon, as published in the News Chronicle, a national newspaper for which he was a correspondent, in May 1937 - 89 years ago. Reg was from a well-known Petersfield family, born in 1894 and died in 1997, aged 103. He was one of Petersfield's best and most versatile locally born artists, yet sadly he is now almost totally forgotten.
Fortunately, his message that litter is shameful is not forgotten. Petersfield Society works tirelessly to reduce the impact of litter in the town, with some success. Our regular mass clean-ups, especially before Remembrance Day, are well known. More recently we have worked closely with East Hants District Council and its contractor, Norse, to help them focus on the deluge of litter that appears by the hour, producing a monthly report on hotspots and challenges.
More can be done to consider the source of littering, including takeaway packaging, and we plan to run a project to work closely with schools and youth groups. The younger generation has to be key to stigmatising littering as an act that is truly unacceptable and anti-social.
