What a beautiful morning to get the final two rows of tatties in the ground, I can’t find any record of me being this late planting them in all the years I’ve had an allotment! After the past seven months of what felt like constant rain it’s great to have soil that is finally able to be worked with 🥳 It’s been great being here early, just the birds and I keeping each other company since 0630 and now no matter what work throws at me at least I have accomplished something with my day 😂 The last photo shows the plastic I picked out this morning from the plot, it gets here with the seaweed that is used on the plot, so at least I can be happy knowing that the plot is well fed and there’s that much less plastic in the sea 😳

My autumn planted garlic and onion bed is looking rather green already, quite surprised to only have one or two empty spaces in the bed considering the amount of water that’s sat on the plot for the last 4 months!

This nasty little blighter is a New Zealand flat worm and is an invasive non-native species which preys upon garden worms. They can easily be found under things such as planks, plant pots or slabs in the garden but also under the soil while they are searching out their prey. They lay eggs that are around 8mm in length and start off red in colour when freshly laid but darken to black in the following days. Once the flatworm locates a garden worm and wraps itself around whilst secreting mucus which first paralyses the worm then dissolves its body down for consummation. If you come across one it’s recommended to avoid skin contact and to put the flatworm in a container with salt, vinegar or strong citrus juice to kill them, eggs can be burst if found.

Time to announce our Spring 24 series of talks and workshops. Together with Aberdeen City Libraries we are happy to tell you about “Spring into Spring”. Our first 4 talks can be found below, with the events now live for booking on the library website by scanning the relevant QR code.

We have great speakers and panellists and will tell you more about each event in the weeks ahead. All of these are free to attend, please come along and bring your friends!

The first of the plants are already to go out into the plot once it’s been rotovated , just one small problem! I’m running out of jobs that can been done here so I think I’ll go and see if the old sledge is still in our shed 😂
