Culter Hillwalking Club

Culter Hillwalking Club We are a hillwalking club based in Peterculter, Aberdeen, but with members throughout the City and Shire.

We normally walk on the first Sunday and the third Monday of every month and hold summer long weekends at locations throughout Scotland. We are a hillwalking club based in Peterculter, Aberdeen, but with members from a wide area in Aberdeen and the Shire. Our walks are fully COVID compliant and when possible we normally walk on the first Sunday and the third Monday of every month. We also hold thr

ee or four long weekends each year in more distant areas of Scotland staying in reasonably comfortable accommodation, hotels, B & B and self catering chalets/cabins. In the summer months and weekends away, we tend to look for Munros to conquer, and for those who would prefer shorter alternatives we arrange walks to lower hills. We also have members who arrange "Sunday Saunters" for club members who wish to walk at a slower pace. The December walk is somewhat shorter and finishes with a Christmas Lunch at a local restaurant or pub and in January we have an evening "Social Secretary's Dinner"

Under COVID regulations are walks start and finish at the same location and it is the individual responsibility of each walker to arrive at that location prior to the appointed time. Beyond COVID we will return to our Peterculter rendezvous point for car-sharing/car-pooling for those who wish to do so. Additionally one-day training activates are arranged locally each year covering topics such as navigation, mountain skills, winter skills and First Ad. Membership of the Club attracts discounts from most local outdoor equipment shops, such as Cotswold and Tiso. The Club is a member of NEMT (North East Mountain Trust) and our members can attend their excellent evening presentations (COVID permitting) at a discount or at no cost during COVID restrictions on-line using Zoom. For those interested in joining the Club we offer two guest walks before needing to join so please take up this offer to see if Culter Hillwalking Club is the club for you. We have a reputation of being a friendly club, welcoming new members. Contact email address and much more information, including past walk reports and photographs, can be found elsewhere on our page.

Monday Walk Report Apr 2026 The Scalp (487m)

A new hill! OK, The Scalp, lying about 5km southeast of Dufftown, will never win any height records, I think it qualifies as a Tump (only 30m prominence!). Few walkers bother it, and now it is watching the groundworks of 7 x 200m high turbines being built. Just like most of our NE Scotland hills, it is a round brown heathery lump.
However, we enjoyed a great day out, admiring the concrete markers that divided Edinglassie from the Crown estate on Tips of Corsemaul, the duckpond home only to various seagulls, the bothy with both seating and table, the lovely cool soft green moss of the forest ride, the all-white mountain hare in the sheep field, the roe deer high up the tree-lined hill, the charm of the quiet River Deveron, the views of Corryhabbie, the Buck, Ben Rinnes and the amazingly extensive Dorenell windfarm.
This was a surprisingly varied route past expensively done-up cottages, farmland, grassy moor, heathery moor and forest. And all under 500m! Especial admiration to my fellow walkers who coped nobly with the rough ground, of which there was a fair extent, and who were such fun to chat with as we travelled through this remote-feeling landscape.
