The Green Backyard

The Green Backyard Community garden in central Peterborough The Green Backyard is a community growing project in central Peterborough.

From this urban base we have transformed a once-derelict former allotment site into a beautiful and productive green space. We promote sustainable lifestyles and raise awareness of environmental issues through practical demonstration and community involvement. With regular workdays, events and activities we bring people and communities across Peterborough together to be a bit greener, healthier an

d happier. We're also home to Refill Revolution Peterborough (), the shop stocks a wide variety of ethical and organic dried and tinned foods, as well as fresh, organically grown veg (when available) and eco-friendly household products such as cleaners and toiletries. We are open three days per week (Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday: 11.00 - 16.00). You don’t need any gardening experience - just turn up. 🌿 A Beautiful Community Day at The Green Backyard 🌿

Today we had the joy of hosting over 200 people at The Green Backyard for the Family Hubs Peterborough City Council event, and what an incredible day it was.

Family Hubs arranged a fantastic range of fun, engaging activities for local families, all topped off with a free, delicious lunch that everyone appreciated.

Our garden was full of laughter, play, and curiosity, exactly what this space is all about.

It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the garden, including lots of new visitors we hope will return and make this space part of their community. Days like today remind us how powerful nature, play, and togetherness can be. πŸ’š

Instead of rushing straight into gardening, we let the garden lead the way. We listened to birdsong and trains, raced along winding paths, became bug detectives, and puzzled over whether our tiny winged visitors were bees, wasps or hoverflies.
There was balancing on logs, games of tag, rosemary cuttings tucked carefully into little hands, and plenty of flowers to stop and smell. Sometimes we explored together, and sometimes the children disappeared on adventures of their own while us grown ups followed at a gentle pace.
We made a new furry four-legged friend and happily joined in a game of fetch. The baby snoozed peacefully through it all. There was coffee for the grown-ups and juicy watermelon for the children (and quite a few other snacks for hungry explorers, actually).
What an absolute joy being outdoors first thing in this weather. The gardening can wait. The garden isn't going anywhere. Sometimes the best thing we can grow is curiosity, confidence and a love of nature.

🌱 If that sounds like your kind of Sunday morning, we'd love you to join us at The Breakfast Garden Club on Sundays. Everyone is welcome. Please book online so we can order enough breakfast!

It's PERFECT weekend weather this for a lazy Sunday morning potter around the garden! Join us at The Green Backyard for a gentle family garden club where little hands can dig in the soil, sow seeds, water plants, explore the garden, and enjoy simple nature-based activities at their own pace.

Take a wander around the garden with a coffee in hand, listen to the birdsong, soak up some early morning sunshine, and enjoy a slower start to the day while the children get stuck into gardening and outdoor play in this beautiful space.

Pyjamas encouraged, and families can drop in anytime between 7.30am and 9.30am as there will be a mix of led and self-led activities so you can take the morning at your own pace. Whether you stay for ten minutes or the whole morning, it's a relaxed opportunity to get outside, connect with nature, and enjoy the garden together.
