"This was the first time I really saw how the money I had been helping to raise could make a difference. It made this year's event extra special."

Meet 21-year-old Adam Darkin, who is celebrating the success of his eighth annual Sue Ryder Charity Cup event, which this year has raised a record £7,733 for Sue Ryder.

Adam started his football fundraiser, held at Peterborough Football Club each May, to support a cause that would have a direct impact on his local community.

This year, however, the event took on a deeper personal meaning. Adam shares. "But last summer, my partner's mum became unwell, progressing very quickly to terminal cancer. She started receiving hospice at home care, then spent her final weeks at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice."
The Sue Ryder Charity Cup sees two teams - the Reds and the Blues - compete in a 90-minute match cheered on by a sea of supporters. The day also includes a charity raffle.

"It's a great day, and this year we absolutely smashed it. I think the turnout was a testament to the love and support people wanted to show my partner's mum, Natalie. It was incredible to see something positive come out of a really difficult time for all."

With next year's Sue Ryder Charity Cup already in their sights, the team is seeking businesses to sponsor the event. If your organisation is interested, please get in touch with our fundraising team by emailing [email protected]

We had a blooming lovely donation last week – a huge collection of plants that were originally displayed at this year's Chelsea Flower Show 🌺

Hartley Botanic generously donated over 120 plants, and Stewart Landscape Construction kindly facilitated the donation and delivery to their new home at our hospices.

Martin Russell, Eastern Region Head of Operations at Sue Ryder, shared, "These plants will help enhance the gardens at both Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice and Sue Ryder St John's Hospice, creating even more beautiful and welcoming outdoor spaces for our patients, families and visitors to enjoy.

"The donation includes a wonderful variety of colourful and sensory plants that will bring interest, fragrance and seasonal colour to the gardens for years to come. Among the collection were two stunning large banana trees, which are sure to become a real feature of the hospice grounds."

We are so grateful for this beautiful donation, which will help our gardens look spectacular for years to come 🌱

It was best foot forward on the catwalk to support an epic fundraising trek for Sue Ryder - a big thank you to Circles Boutique and their wonderful customers.

The team put on a fashion show to raise money for a fundraising trek. Boutique owner Jo's husband, Paul, and his friend James are taking on North Africa's highest peak, Mount Toubkal, in memory of James's dad, Peter.

It was a wonderful afternoon in glorious sunshine, and the outfits were simply stunning.

Thank you to everyone involved 💙

“When I started volunteering for Sue Ryder, I could never have imagined I’d be here 35 years later,”

Meet our amazing volunteer Linda, who is celebrating an incredible 35 years of volunteering with us this Volunteers’ Week.

76-year -old Linda began her journey with us just months after we first opened our doors to patients and their families in 1991. A former journalist, she initially helped raise awareness through media relations - a role she held for 20 years.

She then went on to support the fundraising team by organising and helping at events, something she still does to this day. Supporting Sue Ryder runs through Linda’s family. “My husband has also volunteered for Sue Ryder from almost day one. My father was a volunteer receptionist, my mother-in-law was a bucket collector, and my sons have all done their bit too.”

“After all this time, the hospice feels like a second home. It will always be a special place for me, not least because my father was cared for there in 1993. He felt very comfortable being looked after by people he knew, and I felt grateful for the care he received.”

Linda said one of the highlights - and greatest privileges - of her time volunteering was being selected to represent the charity at a Buckingham Palace garden party, soon after the late Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became its patron.

“There have been many changes in every aspect of my volunteering over the past 35 years. It’s been a lot of fun, and above all, I feel a great deal of satisfaction in knowing I’ve been able to help others.”

Thank you so much for all you do, Linda – your dedication and compassion are truly inspiring 💙

This , we are calling all cyclists! Join on Sunday, 13th September and take on the scenic 55-mile London to Brighton Cycle Ride 🚴

In 2025, Glenn took on the challenge on his grandmother's bike! His Nanny Joan was cared for at home by our teams.

"We gave the bike to Nanny Joan for her 60th birthday. She rode it until she was 85 and was known in her village for visiting people on it," Glenn shared. "If I was going to take on this challenge, it had to be on her bike."

This iconic route is one for cycling enthusiasts and first-time riders alike. You will be fully supported with your adventure, including bike transport back to the start, mechanical support on route and water stations. The route is fully sign-posted so that you can keep your eyes on the road and enjoy the wonderful surrounding countryside.

We have 15 spaces available, so don't miss out – book your spot at sueryder.org/get-involved/fundraise-for-us/events/london-to-brighton/

Taking on a challenge more fun than assembling a MALM, a team from IKEA's Customer Distribution Centre in Peterborough are preparing to take part in this year's Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival – and we're KALLAX-pecting a good race!

There's still time to join them, but you'll need to be KIVIK – entries close this Friday, 5th June.

This will be the seventh year that IKEA colleagues have jumped aboard a 30-foot dragon boat for the event in support of Sue Ryder. Previous teams from the centre have competed under creative names, including 'The Flatpackers' and 'The Swedish Meatballs'. For 2026, colleagues will be known as: The Fast and The Furnished, The Meatball Express and the Allen Key Avengers. The local IKEA team has had a long-standing relationship with Sue Ryder, with many colleagues having experienced first-hand the expert and compassionate care the charity provides.

Hannah Buckley, People & Culture Business Partner at IKEA Distribution Services Ltd, shared, "The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the highlights of our engagement calendar and an event our colleagues eagerly look forward to each year. It's an extraordinary event filled with laughter, team spirit, determination, and, for some, perhaps an unexpected dip in the lake!"

Thank you, team IKEA- go TROFAST and have fun!

The 2026 Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival, organised by NewWave Events, takes place on Saturday, 20th June at Peterborough Rowing Club, Thorpe Meadows, PE3 6LN. Visit dragonboatevents.co.uk/peterborough-dragon-boat-festival/ to enter online.
