Happy Our SEND Adventure Pride! A little late but all the love was well and truly felt today ❤️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🌈

Super special moments, lots of catching up and lots of happy faces ❤️

I always love seeing our biggest littles come back to their safest space and playing alongside our littlest littles… like they’ve been together the whole time - the summer sessions really are so lovely 🥹

Can’t wait to see everybody on the 26th for more summer fun 🥰❤️

Hi everybody!

I hope you are all having a wonderful summer! Some of the OSA families met yesterday for a picnic in the park which I think was SO needed by many!

Just a little reminder that I am running the first summer session next Wednesday - usual time and place (10am @ East Family Hub). As my little boy was in hospital at the end of the summer term, we were unable to have our special Pride celebration so we are having it next week instead! Expect bright, happy, inclusive sensory activities and a safe space for all families 🧡✨

See you next week, and dress as bright and sparkly as you can, if you can! 💖🌈✨

Lots of love, Sophie x

Today I had the honour of speaking at the annual Portage workshop for the second year running. It’s an incredible event where local early years settings come to gain an understanding of the Portage Principles and the Portage model of support that can be applied when supporting children with additional needs and their families. As most of you know Peterborough are so incredibly lucky to have such an amazing Portage team, true specialists in their field. This workshop is delivered by them and they put their heart and soul into teaching it.

For me, being able to give a parent’s perspective to a room full of professionals is daunting, but I hope it highlighted how important Portage is within our community, and the difference their approach can make to families. I truly wish every setting took part in this workshop, whether they are a nursery practitioner, a primary school SENDco or a TA working with SEND children. This workshop makes SUCH a difference. If everybody put the Portage approach into their practice, I genuinely think settings would feel a safer space for all, especially for our little ones with additional and complex needs.

Thank you for having me today and for really listening ❤️

Celebrating CDG Awareness Day 💚 and International Nurses Day 🩵

Always a special session where families are invited to wear green to celebrate and support .uk if they are able to 💚

We had lots of our favourite nurse activities out and the children happily got involved with everything! I always feel like this is a great session as it gets the children touching potential equipment they may be coming across when they have their hospital visits. It makes it feel slightly less scary, unknown and intimidating when they’ve seen it in their safe space.

I didn’t manage to get any photos during the session so thank you to those that sent these across, and a huge thank you to everybody that came and dressed in their many shades of green, I could see how much effort was put into this - I just wish I’d done another group pic!

I’ve also made a little donation to .uk on behalf of our little group.

So, I have had lots of questions recently both in the DMs and when discussing the group in different places from both professionals and families. I thought it would be best to just put a few of the questions I’ve been asked on here as it may be a question you had too, especially if you haven’t been to group yet and were thinking of giving it a go. If there is anything I haven’t covered, please just message me!

We have been so lucky to have such lovely sunny weather for our lovely group the past 2 weeks! Lots of happy faces playing in the sunshine 🥰✨

I just wanted to do a little recap of last week when we had a brilliant visit with a Disability social worker from the Child with Disability team, along with a student social worker. It was such an informative session and I think it’s safe to say that we all learnt a lot about the vital role they play within the community and the support they can give us as families of children with additional needs. The visit was so positive and has truly changed the mindset of families within the group. Everybody was so open, vulnerable and considerate sharing their journey and the struggles they face on a daily basis. I really hope with regular visits from the disability social work team, that we can have an open partnership where it builds trust and breaks the negative stigma that unfortunately puts families off from seeking help.

Thank you so much to the team for coming to see us, and for the families that attended ❤️

Just a reminder that we have a member of the Children with Disability service coming to visit us at group tomorrow. This is a really rare opportunity to have a chat with somebody from the social care team in a friendly and informal setting. Even if your child is at nursery or school, please still come along and have a chat. I think this is going be a great way to ease anxieties and highlight the amazing work that the child disability social work team do and how they can help support your children. If you cannot make it tomorrow, please message the Our SEND Adventure Social Media page and I can ask the question anonymously for you.

The session will be set up as usual, so the children can play and be themselves as they normally would, the service member will just be there to answer any questions and have a general chat with us.

Please take advantage of this, opportunities like this don’t happen often! Please message me with any questions or worries,

Sophie x
