Buglife - The Invertebrate Conservation Trust

Buglife - The Invertebrate Conservation Trust Buglife is the only organisation in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates. Invertebrates are facing an extinction crisis.

There are more than 40,000 invertebrate species in the UK, and many of these are under threat as never before. Invertebrates are vitally important to a healthy planet – humans and other life forms could not survive without them. The food we eat, the fish we catch, the birds we see, the flowers we smell and the hum of life we hear, simply would not exist without bugs. Invertebrates underpin life on

earth and without them the world’s ecosystems would collapse. Today, thousands of invertebrate species are declining and many are heading towards extinction. Worldwide 150,000 species could be gone by 2050 if we do nothing. Each invertebrate species plays a unique and important role in the web of life, but once lost, they cannot be replaced. Many invertebrates have incredible life stories yet to be told, and we literally don’t know what we are on the brink of losing. Buglife’s aim is to halt the extinction of invertebrate species and to achieve sustainable populations of invertebrates.

Earlier this year it was announced that the River Wye has become the first river in the UK to be given cross-border rights covering it from source to sea.

📜The charter recognises how important the river is for people and nature both now, and into the future and it's been endorsed by councils, campaigners and environmental groups from both England and Wales.

❓Did you know that the River Wye is part of one of our Important Invertebrate Areas (IIAs).

💧The Wye Valley and Forest of Dean IIA covers four different counties across both sides of the Wales England border, encompassing a diverse range of habitats from river, riparian and cliff systems, woodland with former quarries and mines, to unimproved grassland.

Want to know more about the habitat and the species that call this area home, take a look at our IIA profile

Last week members of the Buglife Team attended the SCVO Scottish Charity Awards 2026.

🌙 Don't Neglect the Night was nominated alongside a whole raft of amazing campaigns, and whilst our campaign didn't win the Campaign of the Year award, it was a great experience and a fantastic way to raise the profile of Don't Neglect the Night further.

🗣️ "We were honoured to be nominated for Campaign of the Year and attend the Scottish Charity Awards 2026 to represent every species that calls the night its home. The majority of animal species are active at night, yet the nocturnal environment remains one of conservation's most neglected ecosystems. Light pollution is disrupting natural rhythms, and fragmenting habitats on a massive scale, it has gone unaddressed for far too long. Thank you to everyone who has worked on and supported this campaign so far. The need is urgent and our message is clear. Don't Neglect the Night." ~ David Smith, Buglife Advocacy and Social Change Manager.

🦞As invasive American Signal Crayfish numbers surge at a Derbyshire site, a bold rescue mission gives the UK’s White-clawed Crayfish a fighting chance – thanks to a new “Ark site” in Staffordshire.

Conservation efforts have intensified at a site in Derbyshire following a dramatic increase in invasive American Signal Crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus). The invasive species outcompetes and preys on White-clawed Crayfish, and also carries crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci) – a disease lethal to the native “White-claws” that can wipe out entire populations within weeks.

🌼A stunning but threatened landscape is getting a lifeline. With almost £300,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Buglife’s new Chalk Lines project will restore more than 30 hectares of chalk grassland in the Surrey Hills – an area roughly the size of 42 football pitches – creating a haven for some of the UK’s rarest insects.
