Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

It's a day that asks us to think about the older people in our lives and whether they feel truly safe. Not just physically, but in the way they move through the world. In their own homes. In their daily routines.

For some, that safety isn't a given. And that's where The Bobby Scheme comes in.

We work quietly and without fuss, visiting older and vulnerable residents across Cambridgeshire to fit security measures, check smoke alarms, offer advice on scam callers, and simply be a reassuring presence.

Which teams and fixtures do fraudsters target most? The findings, based on thousands of scam cases between October 2025 and March 2026, show fraudsters focus heavily on popular teams such as Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United. Scammers also repeatedly target supporters looking for tickets to some of the most in‑demand football matches in the UK, such as the FA Cup Final and Champions League Final. That's the number of homes The Bobby Scheme has helped secure since we were established in 2001. Each one is a real person, an older resident, someone living with a disability, a survivor of domestic abuse, who now feels a little safer behind their own front door.

Our repeat victimisation rate is less than 1%. And every single elderly victim we've supported has told us they feel safer as a result.

We don't think numbers tell the whole story. But sometimes they're worth saying out loud.

Scam callers are getting harder to spot and they deliberately target older and vulnerable people.

If you or someone you know receives an unexpected call, email, or knock at the door asking for money or personal information, remember three words:

STOP. Don't act straight away, even if they say it's urgent.
CHALLENGE. Ask yourself, could this be fake? It's always okay to say no.
PROTECT. If you think you've been targeted, contact your bank and report it to Action Fraud.

Only criminals will try to rush or panic you. A genuine organisation will never mind if you hang up and call back on a number you trust.

Picture this.

One of our security advisors knocks on the door of an elderly man living alone. He's been burgled before, not recently, but he's never quite felt settled since. He doesn't sleep well. He checks the locks twice before bed.

An hour later, the locks have been upgraded, a door chain is fitted, and a window alarm is in place. Before he leaves, he's also checked his smoke alarm and had a chat about how to spot a scam caller.

He says he finally feels like he can breathe again.

That's a normal Tuesday for our team. This National Volunteer Week, we think that deserves to be said out loud.
