The Bobby Scheme - Cambridgeshire Registered charity supporting victims of crime who are over 60, disabled, vulnerable and victims of domestic abuse.

Our charity gives expert advice on securing your home and staying safe. We install high quality, effective devices around the home. Pro Active home visits available to those over 65 who have not been a victim of crime but may be feeling vulnerable at the cost of £50 including devices and fitting. The clocks go back this Sunday, which means darker evenings from early on. It is a good moment for a quick check outside your home. Are your outside lights working, and are plants or branches covering them? Cambridgeshire Constabulary also suggests a plug in timer switch for a lamp, so your home looks lived in when you are out.

Reports of email and social-media account hacking are rising. Switch to passkeys where available, use strong unique passwords, turn on two-step verification, and always verify unexpected messages through another route before replying. A hacked account can be used to impersonate you and target your friends and family.

A call, text or email asks you for money or personal details. What do you do? Stop. Take a moment to think before you act.

Challenge. Could it be fake? It is perfectly fine to refuse, ignore or hang up.

Protect. If you think you may have been caught out, contact your bank straight away.

Only a scammer will try to rush or panic you. Anyone can be caught out by a convincing scam, and there is no shame in it.

It can feel sensible to hide your home behind a tall hedge or fence. Cambridgeshire Constabulary says it can have the opposite effect, giving someone cover while they are close to your property. Their advice is to keep front boundaries low, around one metre, so neighbours and passers-by can see. Taller fencing at the back and sides is fine, thorny plants along boundaries make climbing harder, and a gravel path means you will hear anyone approach.

🚨 SCAM WARNING: Fraudsters pretending to be police officers
Cambridgeshire Constabulary is warning about an increase in scam calls from people claiming to be police officers investigating fraud. In one recent case, a caller claimed to be a detective investigating two men who had attempted to buy iPhones using stolen bank details. The caller then asked the victim about their bank cards, card details and who they lived with.

Thankfully, the victim became suspicious, refused to provide the information and said they would contact the police directly. The caller immediately hung up.

⚠️ The police will never ask you for your bank card or your card details.

If someone calls claiming to be a police officer and you're unsure:

• Hang up
• Take a moment before making another call
• Contact the police directly on 101 to check whether the call is genuine

Don't let a convincing story pressure you into handing over personal or financial information.

Windows can offer burglars easier access than doors, so they are worth a second look.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary suggests checking how your windows look from the outside. Could a wall, bin or piece of garden furniture help someone reach them? Key operated locks are recommended for ground floor and easy to reach windows, but they only work if you use them, so check they are locked before you go out or go to bed.

October is National Home Security Month, and the darker evenings make it a good time to look at your home with fresh eyes.
Walk round and ask yourself a few simple questions. Do your door and window locks all work properly? Are your outside lights in good order? Could anyone reach a window easily from a bin or garden furniture?
