Spring marks the end of hibernation for most native reptiles in the UK, as the weather warms, and breeding season enters full swing in May and June.
Reptiles such as lizards and snakes require more energy as they become more active, such as during the breeding season. Energy is generated by basking in the sunshine, usually in open, warm, and sunny areas.
Basking areas such as bunds, (specially constructed, low, south-facing earth embankments designed to absorb the sun's warmth) created at one of our project sites at Frieston Shore, are super important habitat features for our native reptiles.
The bund created at the right side of this pond will act as a great spot for reptiles in need of somewhere to bask in the sun.
If you want to create a basking area for reptiles in your garden, you can do so by laying sheets of corrugated tin, roofing felt, or slate roof tiles in areas that receive lots of sunlight. With any luck, reptiles may be seen basking on top or taking refuge underneath the tiles!
