💬 "Thriving community organisations help create a Scotland free from poverty."

As part of Week, Emma, Volunteer Coordinator at Perth Citizens Advice Bureau, has spoken about the invaluable role volunteers play in supporting our service and the wider community.

"Volunteers are a vital part of Perth CAB, and I see first-hand the enormous contribution they make to our service. They bring a wide range of skills, experiences and perspectives, united by a genuine commitment to helping others.

Whether they are supporting clients directly, assisting with administration or contributing to our social policy work, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Their time, care and dedication strengthen our ability to deliver a high-quality, person-centred service and help ensure that people across our community can access the advice they need.

Volunteers can face challenges as they develop in their roles, particularly when supporting people experiencing complex issues or crisis situations. Building confidence, learning new systems and balancing volunteering alongside other commitments all take time.

My role is to create an environment where volunteers feel welcomed, supported and valued throughout their journey with us. As part of a friendly and supportive team, volunteers receive mentoring and dedicated support to help them build both confidence and competence.

I have seen how strong support networks enable volunteers not only to thrive in their roles but also to recognise the difference they make. Whether it is helping someone understand their rights, navigate a difficult situation or simply feel heard, volunteers make a tangible difference to people's lives every day.

So many community organisations rely on volunteers and supporting them is essential if we are to build stronger communities and create a Scotland free from poverty."

📅 Today’s theme for Week is ‘Tackling Child Poverty’

This week, our Partnerships Coordinator, Sarah Russell, attended the launch of the new Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) report on Poverty in Scotland, and reflected on the need for local services to work together to better meet people's needs.

" Week is an important reminder that every child deserves a decent start in life. Yet for many families, poverty is not just about a lack of income. It's also about the hidden cost of navigating complex systems, repeating their story, chasing referrals, and trying to work out where to turn for support.

Through our work building the FORT Partnership and Support & Connect training, we're helping create stronger connections between organisations so that support feels more joined up and accessible. By building relationships and streamlined referral pathways between practitioners, increasing workforce confidence, maximising the trust that is built with services already embedded in the community and encouraging a more person-centred approach, we're trying to make it easier for families to access the right support at the right time (and in the right place).

Tackling child poverty requires more than individual services working in isolation. We need to work together, listen to lived experience, and design systems around people's lives. Through collaboration and this community of support, we create better opportunities for children and families to prosper and thrive."

One of our Energy Advisers here at Perth CAB, Scott, has given us an insight to some of the challenges he encounters and how suppliers can better support their customers.
