The Salers section at the Royal Highland Show 2026 will be in the hands of Colin Wight, Carwood, who takes charge of judging on Thursday 18 June at 9am, with 27 head catalogued.
Farming at Carwood Farm alongside his wife Fiona and their three daughters, Colin and family run a sizeable upland enterprise comprising 180 suckler cows and 700 commercial ewes, finishing all progeny on farm.
While the herd includes around 40 pedigree Charolais, Salersโ have become an increasingly important part of the system over the past 16 years. What began with the purchase of a few heifers, the breed impressed so much that the suckler herd is now predominately Salers or Salers cross cows, typically crossed with a Charolais bull.
Colin says the combination works well for their system, producing cattle that meet commercial demands. โThe Salers cow brings real advantages, calving ease, strong maternal traits and longevity, while the Charolais adds growth and carcass,โ he said.
From a judging standpoint, Colin said, " I am honoured to be asked to judge the Salers at the Royal Highland Show and will be looking for functional cattle that reflect the breedโs commercial strengths."
The key strengths and advantage of Salers within the Carwood system include:
โข Calving ease
โข Improved fertility
โข Mothering and Milking ability
โข Lower culling rate
โข Good temperament of cattle
โข Longevity of cows
โข Growth rate and conformation of finishers when crossed with Charolais
With a solid entry forward at the Royal Highland Show 2026 on Thursday 18th June 2026, the Salers classes are expected to provide keen competition!
