Perthshire Writers

Perthshire Writers A group of Perthshire-based writers meeting regularly to share their work in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Another performance is planned for 2016.

Members of the group, founded in 1976, have a wide variety of writing experience. Some write purely for pleasure, while others have several publications to their credit. We cover all types of writing – poetry, short stories, articles and drama, to name but a few. We have annual competitions judged by established writers from outwith the group. At a typical meeting, members bring along and read wor

k on a given theme, receiving comments and advice from other members. Information is also given about relevant conferences, competitions and other events for writers. Over the years the group has had links with Perth Youth Theatre and Perth Hospital Radio, and this year during Perth Festival of the Arts we presented A Pocketful of Perthshire, with members performing poetry, prose and sketches in public. Occasionally we compile an anthology or other small booklet of members’ work. The programme begins on the first Tuesday of September each year and runs through to the end of April. We meet in the Murray Room at the Salutation Hotel, 30-34 South Street, Perth PH2 8PH at 7:30 pm on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Visitors or potential new members are most welcome to come along to any of our meetings. The annual subscription is £25.00, and members pay a further £2.00 for each meeting attended.

Here's the poster for the next 'Stanzalone' open mic event being held in Auchterarder on Wednesday 27 May. It's free to attend, and those of our members who have been to previous ones can recommend it.
The headliner this month will be writer and poet Anne V McClure.

Our 2025-26 session came to a lively end on Tuesday evening with an outing to Café Tabou, in Perth's restaurant quarter, which was enjoyed by all. Thanks to the restaurant staff for looking after us so well and providing such excellent food.
We had one outstanding item of business to conduct: the award of the Margaret Gillies Brown Trophy for Writer of the Year, which was deservedly won by David Hall.
Here's David receiving the trophy from our newly-elected President, Jennie Murray. Congratulations!

Thanks to everyone who attended our AGM last night.
Congratulations to Jennie Murray, who has been elected as our President for the coming year, and thanks to Bob Ballard, our outgoing President, for his leadership over the last two years.

Here's a photo of Jennie receiving the Presidential gavel from Bob. We wish her all the best for what promises to be a momentous 50th anniversary year!

Getting back into Facebook posting after a wee hiatus. Hope you didn't miss us too much!
We're about to wrap up this year's syllabus with our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 21 April, which will be followed by our Annual Meal on Tuesday 28 April.
But the excitement doesn't stop there: we're just about to reach the fiftieth anniversary of our formation, which we'll be celebrating in September, and we'll be marking that with (amongst many other things) the release of a new Perthshire Writers Anthology, which we'll be working on over the summer.

Hello there!
Since our 2025-26 session is rapidly approaching, with our opening meeting taking place at the Salutation Hotel on Tuesday 2 September at 7:30 pm, we'd like to take the opportunity to re-introduce ourselves.
We're a Perthshire-based group of writers who meet regularly to share our work in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. We cover all types of writing - poetry, short stories, articles, drama, novels, children's and young adult fiction, memoirs and more.
Our members have a range of ability and experience. Some write purely for pleasure; others have several publications to their credit.
At a typical meeting members bring along and read work on a given theme, receiving (if they wish) comments and advice from the others. We also share information about writing opportunities, useful services, relevant conferences, competitions and other events for writers.
We're affiliated to the Scottish Association of Writers, enabling our members to attend SAW's annual conference and enter its competitions. For those who enjoy a challenge, we also have our own keenly-contested competitions that members can enter throughout the year.
We meet from September to April on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 pm in the Murray Room, Salutation Hotel, 30-34 South Street, Perth.
New members are always welcome. A year’s subscription costs £35, and half-price "postal" memberships are also available for those living too far away to attend meetings.
Why not come to one of our twice-monthly meetings at the Salutation Hotel and, without commitment, see what you think? You'll be very welcome.
