Please note that Penwith Chess Club has taken the sad decision to close due to a combination of factors, with immediate effect. We thank all our members and supporters, and the other clubs in the CCCA for their support over the few years of our existence. It was a fun ride while it lasted and I think we made quite an impact in our short existence! Who knows, like the Phoenix we may rise again. Any inquiries, please contact John on 07814 920004.

Sadly, after last season’s successes, Penwith had a difficult match last night, on our first time in the new venue. An in form Bude team beat us (Percy, Kenton, James and John) in the Roberts Cup by 3.0 to 1.0 despite our best efforts. The picture shows a tricky situation for James towards the end of his game.

Never mind England getting to the World Cup semi-finals, Penwith has the trophy that really matters! We came joint 1st with Camborne in the Shield competition, so we have the trophy for the next six months. John James took no part in the team, but someone had to pick up the trophy at the Cornwall Chess AGM. The Shield dates back to to the 1903-04 season - there is so much history and so many stories of brilliant victories and bitter defeats associated with this trophy... Congratulations to everyone who played for the team during last season!

What a see-saw match we had last night! The team of Mark Watson, David Saqui, Percy Gill, Jan Rodrigo and David Jenkins had to win or draw against Truro to take the County Shield. Mark managed a draw against Jeremy Menadue (a good result) and then Percy’s match also ended in a draw, so the score was 1-1. We had a nail-biting wait of over an hour for the next results. David S was up an exchange, Jan was up a couple of pawns and David J was also a pawn ahead, but they were all close games. Somehow, the tables were turned on two of the boards, David S had time trouble and lost an exciting finish just before his flag fell. Jan was involved in a rook and pawn ending, but miscalculated. Had he been able to hang on for a few seconds more, he would have won on time, but a last second mate using a promoted queen gave his opponent the match! On the other hand, David J managed an elegant finish to win the final match on board 5. So 3-2 to Truro. The fate of the Shield lies in the match on Friday between Camborne and Falmouth.
