A lovely lady popped into the shop today, all the way from Durham, and treated us to a song. What a voice.

"There is a common misconception that leaving your tent is like making a donation. It's simply not the case."

That is Matt Wedge of Festival Waste Reclamation & Distribution, and he is right. Around 250,000 tents are abandoned at UK festivals every year. Even after the charities have taken all they can carry, most of what is left goes into the ground.

On the Monday after Kendal Calling, fifteen of us went into the camping fields at Lowther Deer Park to carry away what we could: six from Restore and nine volunteers from Westmorland and Furness Council, with access through BetterNotStop. The van came back full.

Every tent, sleeping bag, roll mat and camping chair is now at Restore Penrith, it's going to allow us to keep supplying rough sleepers with gear they need.

We have written up the whole day here: https://restorecumbria.co.uk/kendal-calling-tents-2026/
