Eden Rivers Trust is the only charity dedicated to making the River Eden, its tributaries and lakes a better place for people and nature. The Eden catchment consists of a unique and beautiful network of rivers, becks and lakes, stretching 80 miles from Hellgill Force to the Solway Firth. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is classed by Europe as a Special Area of Conservation. Since 1
996, we have delivered over 360 practical projects working in partnership with landowners, farmers, communities and agencies to improve and protect the river and its habitat. We provide a wide range of opportunities for local people to find out more about their rivers by getting involved in our vibrant volunteering programme; participating in a schools’ river discovery day; or exploring creative responses to the river through community outreach programmes. Practical, on-the-ground conservation work involves working both in the river and on riverbanks/nearby fields as well as in the wider landscape, and includes the restoration or introduction of features in the river and/or landscape that mimic natural processes in order to manage the flow of water. This aims to reduce the potential risk of flooding and nurture fragile habitats to support an abundance of wildlife, creating amazing places for people who work, live and play in the Eden valley to enjoy.
