Small grants available to local community organisations.

The club has again set aside some modest funds for distribution to local community organisations, charities and schools who require some financial help at the present time.

Small grants of between £50 and £250 may be applied for by emailing us at
[email protected]

The following brief details should be provided:

• Name of applicant organisation.

• How the grant will be used.

• Amount required.

• A contact telephone number.

Grants will only be paid to an organisation by cheque or direct into an organisations bank account.

Please do not apply for more than you require as funds are limited and we want to spread them as widely as possible.

The closing date for applications is Saturday 31st October 2026 and successful applicants will be notified shortly after 10th November 2026.

Our visitor on 22nd September was Dr Jane Haley MBE, Director of Research and interim CEO of MND Scotland. Jane explained to us the effects of motor neurone disease, some of the research which is taking place and the urgent need to have more research undertaken. Unfortunately the latter depends on the necessary funds being made available from either public donations or Government. Janes visit was especially poignant as several of our members have personal experience of the effect of the disease on their loved ones.

The vote of thanks to Jane was given by David McDonald.

Our guest on Tuesday 15th September was Robin Crawford who returned at short notice to fill in for a speaker who was unwell. His talk this time was based on his long experience of dairy farming and milk delivery in the Roslin area. As always his talk was highly entertaining. Thank you for stepping in Robin.

Our visitor on Tuesday 1st September was Robin Crawford. Robin is a member of Loanhead and Roslin Rotary and has lived in Roslin village his whole life. He was therefore well qualified to give us a very entertaining talk about the many different shops and characters which could be found in Roslin in the 50's, 60's and 70's.

Another interesting local visitor last night!

We had invited local photographer Brian Nicholson along to meet us all and share some of his nature photographs. The photos were mainly taken within the local area. Brian also shared how he gets his photos. It involves a great many early rises, a whole lot of patience and I imagine, a deal of technical knowledge.

Our members were very impressed with Brian's presentation. It was a privilege to see the beauty of nature through Brian's eyes.

We had two visitors to the club on Tuesday 4th August. They were Fiona Gibson from Penicuik Hunter and Lass Committee and June Horne on behalf of Penicuik on Parade. They had been invited to come along to receive donations from the club to help with the cost of future community events. We were delighted to welcome our fellow organisers of events on Hunter and Lass Day and share a lively evening with them.

We were delighted to welcome Sam Ryan to the latest club meeting held in the Royal Hotel. Sam had come along to tell us all about andysmanclub which is a talking group to help men through the difficult times in their lives. Some of the facts and statistics of male su***de given by Sam were very hard hitting especially for those of us with male family and friends in the vulnerable age range. The speaker on Tuesday 30th June was Carol Mann who was assisted by her husband Gordon. Carol and Gordon told us about their recent visit to Japan. A trip that had been postponed from 2020 due to Covid.

Thank you both for a very interesting talk. I suspect that you have sparked an interest in visiting Japan in a number of the club members.
