Growing in Small Spaces: Food Growers Collective

Friday 19th June, 10am - 1pm - Muirpark allotments, Tranent

Join us at Muirpark allotments in Tranent where we will talk about growing in small spaces, from small gardens to wee community spaces to allotments.

We will be joined by Dr Stan da Prato, who has allotment there. Stan has an incredibly impressive history in growing and supporting leading organisations in the horticultural field. He is Honorary President of North Berwick Gardening Club, show manager for the East Lothian HS annual show in Haddington and has worked with local community gardening groups, schools and clubs across East Lothian.

This gathering will also pull on the experience of the participants, including what has worked and what hasnt.

Almost any space can be used for growing and can become an abundance of edibles. This event looks to help show us how.

Details and tickets here.

Help Shape the Future of Trevelyan Hall! Your Views Needed

** Fill in online - https://bit.ly/HallSurvey26 **

We are reaching out to the local community because Trevelyan Hall is in a poor state of repair & continues to deteriorate year by year.
The hall was gifted to the local community in the 19th century. Although it's currently managed by East Lothian Council (ELC), its exact legal ownership status is still under investigation. Many local groups & individuals continue to make valuable use of the hall, but ELC is facing significant financial pressures & cannot afford the renovations the building urgently needs.

There are several possible ways forward. One option is a Community Asset Transfer, which would enable the local community to take ownership of the hall & take responsibility for its upkeep & running. This route could unlock access to grants & funding not available while the hall remains under ELC control. The council offers support with grant applications under these circumstances.

Another option is to lease the hall from ELC & run it with a team of community volunteers. This could also attract some grant funding, although the amounts available would likely be limited unless the lease is for a longer term (20–25 years).

A third option is to leave the hall as is. Over time, this would likely lead to further deterioration & could eventually make the building unsafe for continued use.

The Community Council would like to understand how residents feel about the future of Trevelyan Hall & whether there is support for forming a community group (an “umbrella” group) to protect & improve it. Any such group would be completely independent of the Community Council. Our role is simply to gauge local interest & help facilitate the transfer of the hall to local residents, in the same way other successful community-run facilities have been established across East Lothian.

Some ideas for additional uses of the hall include film nights, bridge nights, badminton, a book club or dance nights. These & many other activities could be run on a weekly, monthly or occasional basis. If you have any interest in these ideas or, even better, would like to help run a regular group, please let us know.

The short survey below is completely anonymous unless you choose to provide your contact details. It should take no more than a few minutes to complete. All questions are optional, simply skip any you do not wish to answer. Last submission date is midnight Sunday 5th of July.
