Sometimes you just don't know where a voyage on a sail training vessel will lead you....

We can't believe we welcomed almost 5,000 young people onboard our vessels; Challenge Wales and Adventure Wales over the years.

Many people left our voyages with improved confidence, improved teamwork skills, improved communication skills, improved mental health and had made new friends. This helped them move back into education, training, into volunteering or employment or helped them take that first step into a career.

Today is the start of our final voyage😥from Plymouth to Portsmouth. As Challenge Wales comes to the end of its incredible 16 year journey, it's the stories and impact that define our legacy - not just our sail training vessels, but the thousands of lives transformed through adventure and learning at sea.

The positive comments and emails that followed on from our closure announcement have been truly overwhelming, and we're deeply touched by the warmth, gratitude and pride shared by volunteers, young people and supporters alike.

It's also become very clear the profound impact we have had on our volunteers.

Our journey though doesn't truly end - it is living on in every young person who's discovered their potential at sea, every volunteer who's found a new family and community to be part of, and every supporter and funder who has believed in the power of adventure and learning through sail training.

💥Sad News | Closure of Challenge Wales After Final Voyage

After more than 16 incredible years at sea, inspiring young people and changing lives, the Challenge Wales charity is ceasing its activities at the end of September after its last adventure voyage. 💙

As an award-winning charity, predominantly run by amazing volunteers, the Challenge Wales charity has empowered almost 5,000 young people through outdoor learning at sea, environmental stewardship, education and improving mental health. The Charity worked tirelessly with predominantly disadvantaged young people to raise aspirations, reduce inequality and to lead social inclusion through access to sail training opportunities and helping young people to reach their potential and have a brighter future.

Faced with mounting financial pressures the Challenge Wales Charity has found it difficult to continue its work in a sustainable way. So, after careful consideration the Trustees made the very difficult decision to close the Charity.

Charities like Challenge Wales play a vital role in supporting youth services working together to ensure no one falls between the gaps. This year the Charity wasn’t able to support everyone who needed it (through bursary funding) to be able to access its services. We need to serve our young people to the highest standard and to ensure future support for the young people the best thing is to hand over the baton.

This is why we are excited to announce that our vessel Challenge Wales | Wales’ Tall Ship will transfer into the ownership of Tall Ships Youth Trust on 1st October and continue the Challenge Wales legacy. The Trust is a well-established youth development and outdoor learning charity and the addition of Challenge Wales to their fleet will secure the legacy of continuing to give young people across Wales access to life-changing voyages.

Challenge Wales also created a unique volunteer community with over 500 volunteers over the years getting involved and those wanting to continue their volunteering with Tall Ships Youth Trust can do that through a Volunteer Pathway that has been set up. Challenge Wales volunteers have been the heartbeat of Challenge Wales – with dedication, skills and passion they have empowered thousands of young people and have truly exemplified what it means to give back to the community.

Together, Challenge Wales and Tall Ships Youth Trust are ensuring a lasting legacy – protecting the past, sustaining the present, and creating new opportunities for the future. You can read more here: https://bit.ly/4piqoVL

What a crew!!

The group of young carers and young adult carers who jumped aboard recently certainly nailed it. They aced the teamwork, had an adventure from start to finish, honed their listening and communication skills and their confidence grew.

We love seeing that!

We love seeing the young people grow in confidence, finding their sea legs, having resilience and getting stuck in. It also gives a valuable opportunity for group leaders and support staff to get to know the young people better too! As they leave Cardiff and head towards Swansea we'll be keeping our eyes open and fingers crossed for wildlife. 🐬 🦭🐦⛵️

It's in Wales and it's been a busy one for us.🥳

Youth work focuses on the personal and social development of young people regardless of their background or ability. ⛵🌊

We have an amazing youth worker who champions the young people, meeting them before a voyage, talking about opportunities and making sure young people's voices are heard and they are supported in a positive way when they jump onboard. Our volunteers and sea staff become informal youth workers as they support, mentor and coach the young people onboard to be the best they can.

Sail training develops teamwork, communication, decision making & planning skills. People learn to take responsibility for their actions, try something new and challenging, step outside their comfort zone and become more resilient. And, it can look great on a CV and be that first step into the maritime world. It's also pretty fun too!!

Yesterday our youth worker celebrated in Aberystwyth with the Gwasanaeth Ieuenctid Ceredigion Youth Service as part of their amazing Youth Conference. Meeting young people and groups and talking about . At the same time this week through our sail training programme we are taking a piece of Wales into England, Ireland and Scotland as we visit new and familiar places with young people onboard as we deliver our youth work programme at sea.

We get to meet some amazing young people, but our activities help them achieve....some for the first time. Our activities make a difference to so many young people and the communities they live in. We're looking forward to seeing many more young people jump aboard this year and have their own voyage of discovery.

As one group leader mentioned: "The impact of sailing on Challenge Wales has been amazing. Challenge Wales has been instrumental in supporting our programme to help young people lead independent and fulfilling lives." 🤗

There's still spaces on some of our voyages for 16-25 year olds in July and August so don't miss out. Visit www.challengewales.org to find out more ⛵️
