At our October meeting, nearly 30 members heard about The League of Friends of Tunbridge Wells Hospital, when its Chairman -Gary Purdey - came to talk to us. The League has a fascinating history as does the hospital itself. The hospital began as a dispensary in the Pantiles in 1828 and the present site has been in use since 1856 with the new building opened in 2011. The League of Friends is a charity and was formed in 1954 to "support patients and staff at the hospital" Gary joined the committee in 1996 and became its chair in 1998, since when over £2 million has been raised. Some of the projects they have helped financed included chairs for chemotherapy patients and a sensory garden by the Intensive Care unit. They also give money to each ward to use as they wish at Christmas as a thank you.
