Pembroke 21C CIC (Community Interest Company) links site management with training in conservation and woodland management skills and the development of revenue raising crops and products. It is a company limited by guarantee with a current membership of thirteen, seven of whom are Directors. The Community Interest Company was set up as a social enterprise (social enterprise: a business which exist
s to address social or environmental need; profits are reinvested into the community or back into the business, instead of maximising shareholders or owner profit) that could develop and implement revenue raising projects with defined social aims, both inside and outside the Charity’s area of benefit that would provide a source of unrestricted income for the Charity over the long term. The objects of Pembroke 21C Community Interest Company are:
“To carry on activities which benefit the community and in particular (without limitation) to work closely with the Pembroke 21C Community Association Ltd and its partners to regenerate the economic activity of the community, improve the physical and economic conditions of life in the community and provide facilities in the interests of education, training and social welfare for employment opportunity, recreation and leisure-time occupation.”
The social aims of Pembroke 21C Community Interest Company are to carry out activities for the benefit of the community of Pembroke in order to achieve:
• Training (especially for volunteers that will sustain projects and for people who are not in employment, education or training)
• Job creation
• Sustainable economic development (especially other revenue raising projects that will meet the aims of the Charity and benefit the community)
Our projects and products
Pembroke 21C Community Interest Company links site management with training in conservation and woodland management skills and the development of revenue raising crops and products. Greenhill Farm project: Three fields and a barn, for storing and seasoning wood for firewood, are leased from RWEnPower at Pembroke Power Station. In the longer term it is hoped a lease on the whole farm and buildings would mean the site could be managed as a visitor and training centre. It also hoped that future development of the site will include a horticultural scheme creating saleable produce and training opportunities, an orchard, bees and the production of small bale hay and wood products. It is anticipated that marketable products will be sold at Pembroke Farmer’s Market and online through the website (under construction). Hentland project: We lease these 6.4 hectares of land on the edge of Pembroke Refinery from Valero for growing willow. The willow is managed as short rotation coppice and cuttings are sold to a company and used for environmental purposes. We intend to find other markets for willow such as basket and ornamental willow that can be sold, or made into products to be sold, at the Pembroke Farmers Market and at other markets and venues. Kingsmill Woodland project: This woodland is part of the National Trust Estate at Stackpole and is used for training and as a demonstration of woodland management skills. Long term goals
In the long term we hope to expand into a range of other products and services. Current ideas include expansion of the training programme, social responsibility credits/carbon offset, a wood energy business, a tree nursery, guided walks and talks and further estate and woodland management.
