Hosting volunteers has been part of our DNA for the last 20 years, ranging from retired professors to young graduates, each bringing and gaining new skills and experiences that have strengthened and informed their lives and our work supporting, enabling healthy and sustainable livelihoods in Zanzibar.
Partnering with our sister organisation SAZANI TRUST ZANZIBAR, we are currently hosting four medical students from University of Oxford
Immersed in the local health system and supported through structured orientation and supervision, they are engaged in understanding both the clinical and community context of healthcare on the islands.
While off duty near the seafront, they saw a local child pulled unconscious from the water. Working alongside local residents, our volunteers stepped forward, provided emergency rescue, helped secure urgent transport, and supported the child all the way to hospital, where he stabilised and began to recover.
This wasn’t a staged experience or a photo opportunity. It was real, unplanned, and rooted in community response.
What matters most is not the drama, it is the readiness.
Sometimes that difference happens in a clinic. Sometimes it happens on a beach.
