Last weekend busy one for the team . . .

Date: 30.05.26
Time: 15.45
Callout: 43

The Team were contacted by North West Ambulance after they had received an Apple Phone emergency activation. Reports were vague on location and on speaking direct to Apple it was established that the casualty was on the path heading from Red Tarn to Glenridding.

Team members were already at base due to an open day so were quickly mobilised to the casualty site. Reports initially stated that the casualty was dehydrated, exhausted and unable to walk and had a head injury therefore a Coastguard Helicopter was requested for a swift evacuation.

Once on scene it was established that the casualty wasnโ€™t as bad as first feared so the Coastguard was stood down immediately, the casualty was treated and stretchered off the hill to Greenside. The casualty examined by the Team Doctor and allowed to carry on with his vacation staying at the Helvellyn YHA.

The Rescue lasted 2.5 hrs involving 12 Team members.

The team were called out to a walker who had fallen over and hurt her wrist. The lone walker had tripped over a branch and awkwardly fallen hurting their wrist badly. A passerby had assisted the walker and phoned the emergency services.

The location was on a footpath at the rear of Gowbarrow Fell. A local team member arrived at the scene fairly swiftly and examined the injury which had been stabilised in a makeshift sling. The casualty was able to walk off with assistance of team members and was transferred to the Patterdale base.

From there the casualty made their way to hospital for further treatment.

The rescue lasted around 2 hrs and involved 9 team members.

Sunday team training in the boat and on land . . .

Practicing water rescues and life saving CPR with the team Auto-pulse (life saving machine that does CPR on a casualty to allow the team to extract a casualty via stretcher ).

Sunday training always a great opportunity for the team to practice different rescues scenarios.

Cumbria Police requested assistance from Patterdale Mountain Rescue with a search to locate a missing person at Aira Force, Ullswater as they were concerned for their welfare.

An initial search was carried out and was unsuccesfull despitethe best efforts of Police drones, Police SAR, Coast guard helicopter, NCSAR, Lake District Mountain Rescue Searchdogs and Patterdale mountain members over land on the team boat.

Due to the huge potential search area involved other Mountain Rescue teams, drones and dogs from the the Lake District Search And Mountain Rescue Association - LDSAMRA region were requested to assist.

The search area included large sections of the Ullswater way through Gowbarrow, Pooley Bridge and High Street. Approximatly 70 Mountain Rescue team members from Patterdale, Penrith Mountain Rescue Team, Kirby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team, Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team Kendal Mountain Rescue Team, Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team searched the fells. Thankfully due to the effort of all agencies involved the missing person was safely found just before night fall.

Patterdale MR would like to thank all those involved in allowing a succesfull outcome for the missing person and their family.

The search lasted 11 hours with approximatly 85 people involved.

14 volunteers from the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team responded to a call from Cumbria Police regarding a walker with a lower leg injury.

The casualty was treated on-site by the teamโ€™s Remote Rescue Medical Technicians, who provided pain relief and splinted the limb. The team then executed a stretcher carry to a rescue vehicle at the bottom of the Hause.

The walker was transported via Land Rover to the Patterdale base and handed over to a waiting ambulance for hospital treatment.
We wish the casualty a very speedy recovery.

Recently two of our team members went up to the Priests Hole - a hot spot area for rescues in our patch.

They headed up there to do a clean up, collecting four bags of rubbish of things people had left when visiting.

The team loves the outdoors and want to do their bit to keep the Lake District the beautiful place it is.

If you want to keep the Lake District clean and the ever amazing place it is - it needs your help by taking your rubbish with you, leaving no trace you have been there so everyone can continue to enjoy it . . .

At the weekend four of the team spent it in Norway attending the SAR games . . .

This is a games to test search and rescue skills, there were 16 teams from the UK, Poland and Norway

This year there were more scenarios with the team completing 29 scenarios over 24 hours!

At the SAR games you need to be ready for anything never knowing what will come next much like being in real life rescue situations.

The Scenarios were a mix of search skills, map reading, medical and trauma testing their remote rescue medical skills, communication and dealing with people in distress.

The team had a great time working together, putting into practice their skills, knowledge and experience working as a team.

There is a lot of fun mixed into the games.

Huge thank you to the incredible team at Sargamesorg for delivering another amazing competition - itโ€™s an epic operation to put on over the town of Svelvik.

Thank you to our brilliant guides Adrian and Einar Hagemann who took us round the course, sharing their stories and experiences with us.

It was great to meet and see some familiar teams again:

Exmoor Search & Rescue Team
Poszukiwawcze Ochotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe
Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Service
Glossop Mountain Rescue Team
West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team
West Mercia Search & Rescue

And huge thank you to everyone who liked and shared our video helping us get points in the competition!

This months Sunday training was done in partnership with RAF Leeming Mountain Rescue Team

It was a great opportunity to work together with RAF Leeming Mountain Rescue as they sometimes support the team on rescues.

Together the team went up to one of the teams hot spots - Dove Crag to assess different routes to extract casualties in the stretcher. This involved route planning and rigging the ropes to secure the stretcher on the descent.

It was brilliant to collaborate and spend time with RAF Leeming Mountain Rescue.
