This GCSE will offer young people the opportunity to learn about the natural world and our place in it, with significant fieldwork set to feature, we hope it will inspire the next generation to connect with and care for nature.

We've put our feedback into the consultation and will be exploring how to can work with local schools to support with the fieldwork.

𝗢𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆, 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘀𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘄'𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹.

Please join us for these wonderful Curlew themed events, raising awareness and funds for Curlew conservation.

The Pennine Hills Curlew Choir is returning for another workshop and rehearsal. They will be writing an original song with nature-writer/poet Karen Lloyd and learning Peter Cowdrey's new arrangement of 'The Gather'.

Later in the afternoon "The Lure of the Curlew" will feature performances, spoken word and readings from the Curlew Choir, Peter Chowdrey, Karen Lloyd and others.

Both events are sure to be fun, relaxed opportunities to celebrate one of Nidderdale's most iconic birds.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗡𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗲’𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲?

Quite a lot, it turns out.

A new DNA study has found that adders in the National Landscape appear to form large, freely mixing populations across areas of upland moorland.

That is encouraging, because adders are declining across England. When habitats become fragmented, populations can become cut off from each other, making them more vulnerable over time.

The results from Nidderdale are hopeful, but they also show why connected habitats matter. Even here, one adder population cut off by barriers such as road, pasture or forest showed signs of reduced genetic diversity.

It is a reminder that nature recovery is not just about protecting individual places.

It is also about helping wildlife move safely through the landscape.

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗲’𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. 🐍

A landmark DNA study has found that adders in Nidderdale are among the most genetically healthy and well-connected of those analysed in England.
The results suggest our upland moorland could be a nationally important stronghold for the species.

That matters because adders have been declining across England for decades. In many places, smaller populations are becoming isolated, which can make them more vulnerable over time.

Here in Nidderdale, the early findings show something more hopeful: where habitat remains connected, adders are still able to move, mix and maintain healthy genetic diversity.

The study was commissioned by Natural England, with fieldwork supported by Nidderdale National Landscape, local volunteers, Yorkshire Water and others.

🌿 Stay Tick Aware in Nidderdale National Landscape 🌿

As you explore Nidderdale this spring and summer, it’s important to keep tick awareness in mind - especially in grassy, bracken‑covered, and woodland areas.

🕷️ What are ticks?
Ticks are small, spider-like creatures that can attach to skin and feed on blood. Some can carry infections such as Lyme disease.

✅ How to reduce your risk:
• Stick to clear paths where possible
• Wear long trousers and tuck them into socks
• Wear light coloured clothing so that ticks are more easily noticed
• Use insect repellent that is effective against ticks
• Check yourself, children, and pets after being outdoors

🔍 Found a tick?
Remove it promptly using fine‑tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool - grasp close to the skin and pull steadily.

Today we’re at the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 report launch at Bolton Abbey, marking an exciting milestone for this groundbreaking programme.

We’re proud to be part of this partnership alongside North York Moors National Park Trust, North York Moors National Park , Yorkshire Dales National Park , Howardian Hills National Landscape and York St John University – working together to put nature at the heart of health and wellbeing.

And the results so far are clear:
✅ Mental wellbeing increased by 24%
✅ Loneliness reduced by 15%
✅ People feel more active, connected and confident

From carers and those recovering from illness, to people facing isolation or mental health challenges, the programme has supported individuals to reconnect with nature – and each other.

Participants told us they felt like “people, not patients” – a powerful reminder of the role nature can play in supporting healthier, happier lives.

🌳𝗔 𝘀𝗲𝗮 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝘂𝗯𝗲𝘀 🌳

Liz and our NNL volunteers have been putting in an amazing effort over the last few weeks collecting tree shelters from across the National Landscape.

Last week they dropped off 16 bulk bags to Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust for recycling. That's over 5,000 tubes removed from the landscape!
