As part of , we want to take a moment to shine a light on the incredible people behind Darkwood Crew and our ever-growing initiative.

What started as a simple idea has evolved into a wide-reaching, community-led response to some of the challenges facing Ferguslie Park. Every week, volunteers are at the heart of making it happen.

From our Community Market helping local families access affordable groceries, to our Electric Appliance & Large Furniture Initiative giving unwanted items a second life. From our Community Meal bringing people together around the table, to our Community Growing Area creating opportunities for learning, sustainability, and connection. From our Man In A Van service helping residents with deliveries and collections, to the countless behind-the-scenes tasks that keep everything moving.

None of it happens by accident.

It happens because ordinary people choose to do extraordinary things for their community.

A huge thank you to our Board of Trustees, whose leadership, vision, and commitment continue to drive the organisation forward. Equally, thank you to every volunteer who gives their time, skills, energy, and compassion across the many strands of our work.

Together, you are helping tackle food insecurity, fuel poverty, isolation, and environmental challenges in a way that is dignified, practical, and genuinely community-led.

You are proof that some of the best solutions don't come from the top down, they grow from the ground up.

Thank you for helping Ferguslie flourish.

⚠️ COMMUNITY MARKET UPDATE ⚠️

Unfortunately, this week’s Community Market has had to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

We have been advised that our weekly FareShare allocation cannot be collected at this time due to health & safety issues identified at the warehouse. As a result, we are unable to operate the provision to the standard we would expect.

We fully appreciate the inconvenience this may cause and sincerely apologise to all of our regular visitors, volunteers, and supporters.

⚠️ Important Notice – Ferguslie Community Market ⚠️

Please note there will be a slight change to access arrangements for the evening session of the Community Market on Thursday 14th May (6pm – 8pm).

All visitors must enter the building via the Blackstoun Road entrance, specifically using the stairs leading down from the Housing Association door.

This temporary arrangement is necessary to avoid interrupting the dress rehearsal for Paisley Opera’s forthcoming and hugely exciting performance of Carmen.

It is really important that all visitors follow these instructions to help ensure both events can run smoothly and respectfully alongside one another.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation. 💚

🌱 Ferguslie Community Market – Now Open Evenings! 🌱

We’re really pleased to share some exciting news with our community 💚

Following a recent community consultation, where local people told us that daytime opening times can be a barrier, we’re introducing a new evening session of the Ferguslie Community Market.

📅 Starting Thursday 2nd April
🕕 Evening Session: 6pm – 8pm
🕚 Daytime Session: 11am – 1pm (as normal)
📍 The Tannahill Centre

This change comes directly from what you told us. The consultation showed clear demand for an evening option, particularly for those working or with daytime commitments.

The evening session will run as a 3-month pilot, and we’ll continue listening to feedback as we go.
As always, the Community Market will continue to provide up to £25 worth of shopping for a small contribution, helping support households while reducing food waste and strengthening community connections.

This development has been made possible through partnership working with:

🤝 The New Tannahill Centre
🤝 Merchants House of Glasgow

We’d really appreciate your help spreading the word as this is about making the market accessible to as many people as possible.

If you’ve not been before, you’re more than welcome. If you already come along, we’ll see you soon!

🛒 You told us. We listened.

We asked the community for feedback on the Ferguslie Community Market, especially about opening in the evening.

Here’s what you told us 👇

📊 92% said there is a need for an evening session

⏰ 83% said a Thursday evening market would make it easier to attend

🚧 The biggest barrier right now? Daytime opening hours

Many people told us they’d like to use the market but can’t because of work, caring responsibilities, or other daytime commitments.

💚 This feedback has helped shape the next step for the Community Market, and plans are underway to introduce a Thursday evening session.

Thank you to everyone who shared their views in what really is community led change in action.

At approximately 8pm we will go live to decide which of the 19 from the 58 participants who provided an email address will win a £25 Asda Voucher.

📢 Help shape the future of Ferguslie Community Market! 🛒

We’re looking at the possibility of adding a Thursday evening session to Ferguslie Community Market to make it more accessible for working families and to help reduce pressure on the busy daytime session (which already supports around 50 local households every week).

👉 Whether you use the market, don’t use it, or would like to but can’t make the current times, your voice really matters.

Please take a couple of minutes to complete our short survey here:

💷 Prize Draw

You can choose to leave your email at the end to be entered into a draw for a £25 Asda voucher – but taking part is completely anonymous if you’d prefer.

We’re especially keen to hear from:

✔ People who work during the day
✔ Families
✔ People who don’t currently use the market
✔ Anyone with views on whether an evening session is needed

This will help us decide if expanding the market is the right move for the community.

Thanks in advance for helping us plan something that actually works for Ferguslie Park 💪💚

My name is Eleanor. I’m 81 years old. Every Thursday at 6:00 a.m., I wheel my blue recycling bin to the curb. For fourteen years, this has been my ritual—just me, the quiet streetlights, and the soft clatter of bottles in the dark. After my husband passed, those early hours became my private space.
Until I noticed Mr. Henderson.
He lived three houses down, nearly 90 years old, his hands gnarled by arthritis. Every Thursday, I watched him struggle—dragging his bin inch by inch, leaning heavily on his cane. I stood at my window, coffee cooling in my hands, wondering whether I should offer help. But pride is delicate. My Arthur used to say, “Never lift a person’s burden without asking, or you might break their spirit.”
So I chose something quieter.
One frosty morning, before the sky began to lighten, I slipped outside and wheeled Mr. Henderson’s bin to the curb while he slept. I said nothing. I left no sign. I simply went back inside.
That Thursday, I found a small folded note taped to my own bin handle. In careful, trembling handwriting, it read:
“The bin was lighter today. Thank you. — M. Henderson”
My throat tightened. I had been seen.
I kept doing it. Every week. And every week, another note appeared:
“My grandson visited. I told him about the angel who moves the bins.”
“The magnolia by your gate is blooming—pink like my wife’s favorite dress.”
“You left your glove on the sidewalk. It’s drying on my radiator.”
One bitter January morning, I lifted my bin lid and found a small container of homemade soup. The note said:
“For your strength. Mine is in my hands today, not my feet.”
Then one week, Mr. Henderson didn’t answer his door. After three days, I called his daughter and learned he was in the hospital with pneumonia. That Thursday, despite my aching knees, I wheeled both bins to the curb. As I turned back, Mrs. Gable from across the street appeared beside me. She squeezed my arm and whispered, “I’ll take his bin next week, Eleanor.”
The following Tuesday, I opened my door to find my bin already waiting at the curb. A note was taped to the handle—from the teenager down the block:
“Saw you limping, Ms. Eleanor. My turn.”
By the next Thursday, six bins stood neatly in a row. Notes fluttered in the morning breeze:
“For Mr. Henderson’s return.”
“My legs work today.”
“You taught us to look up from our own chores.”
When Mr. Henderson finally came home—frail but smiling—he found his bin at the curb. Inside, instead of recycling, was a quilt stitched by twelve neighbors. Each square carried a message:
“For sleepless nights.”
“For stories we still want to hear.”
“For when your hands need rest.”
He cried. So did I.
I learned that kindness doesn’t have to be loud or dramatic. Sometimes it’s as small as moving a bin before dawn, trusting that someone will feel the weight lift before they ever know why.
The world doesn’t change when we shout.
It changes when we notice the quiet burdens others carry—and choose to lift them.
Now it’s your turn.
