When a family fosters, it’s important that birth children understand their foster sibling’s need for privacy, confidentiality and, in some cases, additional safeguarding measures.

This includes being mindful of what is shared on social media and understanding why certain restrictions may be in place to help keep their foster sibling safe.

💙 This week, we’re celebrating Children of Foster Carers Week in partnership with The Fostering Network, sharing insight into what life can be like for children and young people who grow up in a fostering family.

❓ Can I foster if I rent?

🏡 Yes, renting a home doesn’t automatically mean you can’t foster. When considering whether someone can foster, home ownership is not the only consideration.

✅ You must have a spare bedroom, but we also look at your individual circumstances, including your home environment and whether it can provide a safe, stable, and welcoming place for a child or young person.

MYTH: “I need professional experience to become a foster carer.”

Not true!

You don’t need to have worked in social care, childcare or a similar profession to foster.

Foster carers come from all kinds of backgrounds and bring a wealth of life experience, patience, understanding and compassion to their role.

❓ Can I foster if I work?

🏡 This depends on the type of placement you wish to offer.

🧒 For full-time foster carers and full-time short breaks carers, we would ask that your focus is on the young person/young people in your care and that you have no other employment.
