Just a reminder that Milkdrops and Gorbals are closed today, but Kirkintilloch and Johnstone are open!

You can also contact the National Breastfeeding Helpline UK for immediate support from the comfort of your own sofa 😊

With apologies, our groups at Milkdrops (Monday morning) and Gorbals (Monday afternoon) are closed on 15 June. Our volunteers all have families and it is trickier for some with children off school for the football holiday.

Face-to-face support will still be available at our groups at Kirkintilloch (10-11.30am) and Johnstone (1-2.30pm). If those are not convenient, you can contact the National Breastfeeding Helpline UK 24/7 by phone or social media.

Today for we are looking at Oxytocin 🥰😍

New babies have a strong need to be close to their parents, as this helps
them to feel secure and loved.

When babies feel secure, they release a hormone called *oxytocin*. This acts like a fertiliser for their growing brain.
Oxytocin:
- Helps form a bond between mother and baby.
- is produced in both parent & baby when you cuddle, smile & talk with your baby, and especially during breastfeeding. Dads get it too!
- reduces stress levels.
- reduces pain sensitivity.
- has an effect on our general health by lowering our blood pressure and
boosting our immune systems.
Breastfeeding stimulates the release of oxytocin, causing the muscles in the breast to contract allowing the let down of milk to occur.

Oxytocin is part of nature's system to not just survive but thrive; a feel-good reward that can help you cope with the stresses of parenting. However you are feeding your baby, take time to wallow in some oxytocin snuggles 🥰

Today in we are looking at the value of breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is more than just feeding, it is a powerful, natural way to support a baby’s growth and immunity while promoting maternal health and strengthening emotional bonds.

Its benefits extend beyond the family to society as a whole.

How breastfeeding helps a mum/breastfeeding parent

💕 Lower cancer risk
Breastfeeding helps protect your health long‑term.
The longer you breastfeed, the lower your risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Even a few months makes a difference.

❤️ Heart and diabetes protection
Mothers who breastfeed are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure later in life.

🤍 Recovery after birth
Breastfeeding releases hormones that help your womb shrink back, reduce bleeding, and support bonding and emotional wellbeing.
It boosts your oxytocin and dopamine levels which helps to lowers the stress hormone (cortisol), reduces blood pressure, and decreases anxiety and fear. It helps you feel calmer and more relaxed.

How breastfeeding benefits your baby

🛡️ Protection from infections
Babies who are breastfed are much less likely to be admitted to hospital with tummy bugs, chest infections or ear infections, especially in the first year of life.

🌙 Safer sleep
Breastfeeding greatly reduces the risk of cot death (SIDS). Research has shown that any amount of breastfeeding helps.

🌱 Health now and in the future
Breastfed babies are less likely to develop obesity and diabetes as they grow older.

🩸 Serious illnesses
Children who were breastfed are less likely to develop some rare but serious illnesses, including certain childhood cancers.

💩 Gentle on little tummies
Breastmilk is easy to digest and helps babies develop a healthy gut, which supports their immune system.

🌟 Benefits for both of you
Breastfeeding supports close bonding and emotional connection
It responds directly to your baby’s needs
Breast milk is always ready, safe, and made specifically for your baby's needs

Scottish Breastfeeding Week focus:
In Scotland breastfeeding and bottle feeding are both protected by The
Breastfeeding etc. (Scotland) Act 2005.

Did you know Scotland has a law to protect you?
In Scotland breastfeeding and bottle feeding are both protected by The
Breastfeeding etc. (Scotland) Act 2005.

If a person deliberately prevents or stops someone from feeding a child
under the age of two in a public place in Scotland they are committing a
criminal offence. If a mother is asked to move to another part of the
premises, or leave the premises completely this is also an offence. This
applies to places that the child has the legal right to be in.

This means that any person should be able to feed a child when required
and in the most appropriate place for them, without the fear of interruption
or criticism.
