Not meaning to spoil your enjoyment of the sunshine, but just a gentle reminder that heat and sunlight can increase health risks for some people using medication for their mental health.
Medications that affect how the brain works (known as psychotropic medications including antidepressants and antipsychotics) can impair the body’s ability to regulate temperature, making it harder for it to respond appropriately to heat stress. Both antipsychotics and antidepressants can cause people's skin to be more sensitive to sunlight and can lead to skin reactions
So, lets all be cool cats and follow these simple steps to stay safe this summer:
- Use high factor sunscreen and stay out of direct sunlight.
- Keep as cool as possible and make sure you drink plenty of water.
- Follow standard heatwave advice, such as keeping curtains and windows closed, wear loose light clothing made of natural materials, such as cotton and linen, and wear a hat when outside.
- Avoid strenuous physical activity and alcohol, and take cool baths or showers to bring your temperature down.
Those struggling with the side effects should not come off their medication without consulting their doctor or specialist
Let's all stay safe out there!
