Paisley Florist Society Gardening Club

Paisley Florist Society Gardening Club Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the month at St Mirin Halls, Paisley and start at 7.30pm. The annual subscription is £15.

The Paisley Florist Society Gardening Club was instituted in 1782 (then called The Paisley Florist Society) and has had a continuous history to the present day. In 1999 a vote was taken at the AGM to add 'Gardening Club' to the title. It is interesting to note the use of the word 'Florist' in the title, florist meaning 'grower of flowers' rather than as at present a seller of flowers or flower arr

anger. Florist Societies date back to the 17th century and owe their origin to the Flemish weavers who settled first in England around that time. When the Flemish weavers arrived in England they set up businesses employing apprentices who later travelled throughout Britain setting up their own firms which were to become the foundations of Britain's great spinning and weaving industry. Fortunately they carried with them their employers' great love of flowers and as Paisley was a centre of weaving in an agricultural area it was natural that a Florist Society should be set up here. The Society originally used its funds to introduce new flowers to the area - seeds, corms etc being distributed to the members. Competitions were held frequently to evaluate growing methods and winners awarded prizes accordingly. There seems to have been a lot of interest in Auriculas, Pansies, Carnations, Pinks, Tulips and Hyacinths. Many of the old minute books are held in the Paisley Reference Library and make really interesting reading.
