Stop doing this for Deadlifts!! ββ
Two common issues I see in the gym all the time, particularly with beginners, is the set up for using a barbell for deadlifts & the correct posture to use throughout the lift.
1. Hands too wide & feet too narrow (or in some cases the opposite).
Whilst there is benefit in doing both of these variations in terms of engaging different muscles or for specific sports (e.g. sumo deadlift on powerlifting etc) - the focus on being purposeful with your movement. So! For conventional Deadlifts a strong starting position looks like:
Feet hip width to create a strong stable base with your grip lining up outside your knees. This allows you to create a strong leg drive without forcing your knees in (like if your arms are too narrow). Leg drive is the key for a strong deadlift!
2. Rounding of the back
Firstly, yuck π Secondly, it's all about engaging your core and lats here. To get this position correct and maintain a strong, flat, neutral back you want to create tension on the bar and shift your weight slightly through your heels.
A nice queue I use in the gym is to pull the slack out of the bar so you hear a wee clunk noise of the barbell engaging against the plates. This creates tension, then it's all about the pull πͺ
No go practice your Deadlifts ππ
