That’s a wrap! Two holiday clubs, 24 young people and a lot of laughs. Thank you to and for the essential funding to make this happen. Over the course of the two weeks, young people from Torbay learnt how to DJ, make films, create their own animations, present radio shows and become music producers. Most importantly, they got to meet other young people and create new connections.

We are completely blown away by Alby from Riviera Racers, who has just run 31 marathons in 31 days to raise money for Sound Communities CIC — that's over 800 miles, powered by nothing but sheer determination and a belief in what we do here in Torbay.

A massive thank you from all of us at Sound Communities!

Sound Communities just pulled off one of its biggest and most ambitious projects yet… Torbay first grassroots, youth-led music festival!

On Saturday 18th we opened the banjo to the people of Torbay and showcased some of the most talented young performers from around the bay. Providing them a place to get their name out and perform in a place young people don’t get to perform at normally.

Sound Communities has always put young people in the lead and Tor-VYBZ once again proved that when you give young people a chance, they can put something on that’s pretty incredible.

The festival was a massive team effort, but really the hard work was done by the young people. They worked non-stop for 2 days to build and then run the entire event. From the photography (5450 photos to be exact), filming, stage managing, sound tech, build, break, donation collections, performing, spray painting and so much more. They worked harder than we ever could’ve imagined.

On just the Saturday we had over 20 young people giving their time and energy to make the festival happen! And that’s on top of the 28 young performers who got up on stage and showed Torbay that the next generation deserves a place on the stage just as much as the adults.

There are so many photos to share; from the incredible energy of the crowd to the performers on stage and most importantly the smiles on the faces of our staff and young team who made the whole thing possible. Here are a few of our favourites so far!

Once again a MASSIVE thank you to our funders, who have believed in our young people form day 1 and allowed this whole thing to happen - The Ardonagh Group Arts Council England Youth Music The National Lottery Community Fund
We hope to see you all in 2027

On the Wednesday Playposium city takeover, Sound Communities invited people from around the world of play (literally and conceptually) to answer the question: 'What happens when creativity is shared generously and playfully with the wider community?'
Taking lost vinyl records from charity shop shelves, decorating them as powerfully enticing works of art, and filling them with creative treasure the room created a new discography for the people of Exeter, which was quite literally shared on the streets and in the shops of the city. David from Denver called the session 'Surprising, creative and meaningful.' Curious? Dig in the playful crate on this link and DM us for more info!

And something about what we're bringing back:

Cal said: 'Our brains are full to bursting with ways to bring play, connection, and meaning into our professional and personal lives. From the goofy stuff, to the 'soft eyes', to the new research, and wide-ranging uses of all we covered in just four days. It was incredible to be around so many people at the vanguard of this approach to being, thanks everyone who made the week unforgettable'

BIG UP Tor-VYBZ Festival Sound Communities CIC

Last weekend I attended the Youth built grass roots festival... Tor-Vybz... and the name lived up to what it said... Amazing work from ALL of the team!

I found myself on their live stream properly enjoying myself for hours on end 🙏

Events like this remind me how important it is to let go. Let loose. Be a version of you that you needed. Care less about what others think, and be proud of who you are right now.

Music has a powerful ability to bring us together. It can activate a physiological response in you that dissolves anguish and ignites creativity.

We hope Tor-Vybz returns for 2027. It's needed.

This event has inspired us.

Again... WELL DONE to those involved in making this possible. Be incredibly proud.
