💜 We heard you.

The PCOS to PMOS name change has raised so many questions — and none more than this one:

"But what about my cysts?"

If the name change has triggered questions for you around cysts, ovarian cysts, follicles, your diagnosis or what this all means — this one is for you.

This Friday we're joined by Professor Terhi Piltonen — one of the world's foremost PMOS experts and current President of AE-PCOS, the international society of leading PCOS researchers and clinicians worldwide — for a free live webinar answering exactly that.

Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) is the new name for the condition
previously known as Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) — a change that accurately reflects the condition, which affects 1 in 8 women, or more than 170 million worldwide.

The changes follows 14 years of research and advocacy and the largest global engagement ever for a medical name change, with more than 22,000 survey responses, workshops with women who have lived experience, health professionals, and the involvement of 56 patient organisations and professional societies around the world, including ourselves.

The term PCOS focused on “cysts” and ovaries, even though women don’t have cysts. PMOS is
a long term endocrine/ hormonal and metabolic condition, and the misunderstanding has
contributed to delayed diagnosis, poor quality of care and lack of research and funding.
Women living with the condition led the call for change — and their voices matter ❤️
86% of patients and 76% of health professionals support the name change.
The change to PMOS will improve understanding, awareness, earlier diagnosis, better care and
more research. We recognise that this change will take time and there is a 3 year transition period where both names will co-exist together - the work doesn’t stop here!

Today Verity attended the launch of the renewed Women’s Health Strategy for England — something we have been eagerly awaiting.

At the launch, Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting announced a number of commitments that could positively impact those living with PCOS, including:

• Shorter waits for gynaecology care
• Faster diagnosis and treatment pathways through neighbourhood women’s health services
• Better digital access to women’s health pathways via NHS Online
• A commitment to tackle medical misogyny and ensure women’s voices are heard
• Improved standards around pain relief and informed consent for procedures

Encouragingly, PCOS was specifically referenced by Wes Streeting in his speech (in our Highlights).

This is significant. Prior to the incredible work of the APPG on PCOS (and especially the Chair Welsh MP), alongside Verity’s sustained advocacy, PCOS was rarely—if ever—mentioned in national women’s health policy discussions of this kind.

Things are changing.

But women’s health is about far more than gynaecology and menstrual health alone. It must reflect the full breadth of complex, long-term conditions that impact women across their lives — including endocrine and metabolic conditions like PCOS.

PCOS affects over 3 million women and girls in the UK — more than some of the conditions it is often grouped alongside — yet is referenced just three times in this 90-page strategy, and only in broad lists alongside other conditions.

For context: endometriosis is mentioned 27 times and fibroids 8 times.

We need time to review the strategy in full, but our initial view is clear:

Recognition is welcome.
Action is what matters.

We will continue pushing to ensure PCOS receives the attention, prioritisation and investment it deserves.

Verity has spent over a decade campaigning for the name Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) to change. Because for too long, it has been misleading, confusing and yes, harmful.

We’re proud to share that a new name has now been agreed — through global consensus between patients and healthcare professionals.

It will be announced very soon, and you can count on us telling you as soon as we can!

This is more than a name change. It’s a step toward better understanding, earlier diagnosis, more appropriate care, and recognition of the full complexity of this condition. A name that reflects the lived experience of millions. An accurate name.

While we can’t share it just yet… we’d love to hear from you 👇
