"St Michael's Street will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians between 4pm and 11pm on Wednesday 17 June due to an event at the Oxford Union.

A small number of bus routes will operate slight diversions, but no bus stops are affected. No other road closures are planned."

Raise the Colours is being taken to the High Court by Oxfordshire County Council, in an attempt to stop “the continued unauthorised placement of flags on or near the public highway”. OCC is seeking a civil injunction, after it issued a formal legal notice in March.

Council leader Tim Bearder said: “We are proud of Oxfordshire’s diverse communities. We proudly fly the Union Flag and St George’s flag at County Hall, but there’s an important distinction between lawful expression and activity that puts people at risk or intimidates residents in their communities.”

OCC says Raise the Colours has directed “abuse, intimidation and harassment” at both Oxfordshire residents and council workers.

We looked at RTC and the criminal background of some of its Oxfordshire organisers in a long read in March (link in the comments 👇).

Statement on the Oxford Union invitation to Tommy Robinson

“I am deeply concerned by The Oxford Union’s decision to host Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, also known as Tommy Robinson, at its debate on Wednesday.

“Oxford is a proudly diverse, multicultural city. Whilst we are committed to free speech and open debate, that must be balanced against ensuring all our residents can live free from hatred, intimidation and harm.

“Faith leaders and members of our communities have already voiced their strong opposition to this invitation, and I stand with them. I urge the Oxford Union to reflect seriously on the consequences of its choices – not only for its own reputation, but the message this event sends about Oxford and its values.

“A large-scale security operation is being prepared, involving extensive police resources and road closures. This will cause considerable disruption for local residents and businesses, and comes at a substantial cost. The Oxford Union must meet the full costs of staging their event, rather than leaving Oxford’s taxpayers to pick up the bill.”

Councillor Susan Brown, Leader of Oxford City Council
