🏗🛢 The Government’s decision on licensing the highly contentious Rosebank oil field is expected over the coming weeks. How should we frame the debate - based on how people across the UK think about fossil fuels, and renewables as an alternative?

Here’s what we recommend:

𖣘 Show that people support a move towards clean energy, away from fossil fuels: Brits feel largely worried and concerned about the world’s dependence on fossil fuels such as oil and gas. In Scotland, more people take pride in the offshore wind industry than in the North Sea oil and gas industry.

☀️ Inspire a better future, without trashing the past: people across the country are far more excited by the future of clean energy than they are enraged by ‘dirty’ energy. However, for many there’s a strong sense of pride and identity in the fossil fuel industries that have long powered our country, forged communities and provided jobs.

👥 Incorporate the views of people in Scotland: when asked whether the Scottish Government should support or oppose Westminster in ending new offshore drilling licenses in the North Sea, 44% of people say they should oppose it.

Chris Stark, head of the UK government’s mission to deliver clean power by 2030, recently spoke to Carbon Brief: “The problems and woes of this country, in terms of the cost of energy, are due to fossil fuels.”

Renewables chart a clear path to cheaper and cleaner energy. How we talk about this transition has the power to shift both the narrative and our overreliance on fossil fuels.

📢 Did you catch us on Channel 4 News last night in their hot take on using comedy to fight back against climate change?

A wave of comedians and public figures are talking more and more about climate on stage, on screen and on social media. And it's not just a funny coincidence...

💡We know from our latest research that people want to see more climate content in entertainment. We also know Brits are more likely to trust people who are down to earth and know their stuff on climate.

Channel 4 spoke to Matt Winning, comedian and climate scientist, currently doing a run at Soho Theatre of his show about fatherhood, climate change, finance and responsibility.

👥 Matt says “Climate change is about people. The way we talk about it, the way it’s communicated, is always so far away from people’s day to day lives.”

The feature shows many others raising awareness on climate change in humorous and human ways - like political satirists Tom Walker as Jonathan Pie and Dahler, and climate campaigners Palmer and Leah Thomas.

🎭📺 Brand new insights on how 7,000+ Brits really think and feel about climate content in culture - and how the culture sector can meet rising demand.

What you need to know:

🎥🏛️ Across society, people want and expect climate change to be talked about in what they watch, visit and enjoy - provided it’s done well. Leaders and practitioners should feel confident that audiences want this - and should continue to explore what it means to do this ‘well’.

🌎 👥 Universally, audiences want solutions to climate change to be shown more often. People need to see potential for positive change - with more of a focus on solutions and community action, and less onus on individual action.

🚀 Progress beats perfection. People agree that organisations, including museums, galleries and theatres, can and should show climate content - even if they’re still on their own sustainability journey.

💡This presents an enormous opportunity for creatives and cultural organisations - to step up and respond to this appetite for more climate stories and content.

Based on More in Common’s seven British segments, the research offers guidance on how to cater to different audience tastes depending on their values.

🚜 New Britain Talks Climate & Nature research on farming has landed!

Here to help you shape communications and policymaking that meaningfully engages people on the vital role of farming in building a more sustainable future.

👉 What you need to know:

⛈️ People feel that farming is on the frontline of climate change. The majority of Brits say that farmers are more likely to suffer its impacts than other groups in society.

🌾 Brits show high levels of positivity towards farmers, across cities as well as towns and rural areas. Almost three quarters of Brits believe farming’s number one purpose is to feed the nation.

🧑‍🌾👨‍🌾 Brits increasingly feel that farmers are undervalued and unsupported in today’s world. Protecting our food supply and supporting British farmers tops people’s list of priorities for government climate change policy.

👉 Check out our new insights - and what they mean for policy and communication in farming: https://climateoutreach.org/btc/2025/report/farming/

⭐ As we look back on 2025, our star on the top of the tree this year has to be our Britain Talks Climate & Nature research - with Secretary of State, Ed Miliband calling it compulsory reading!

Our CEO Rachael Orr reflects on some of our highlights at Climate Outreach this year - including our involvement in the Government’s new participation plan, our newest Climate Visuals collections, valuable time invested in talking about climate with groups worldwide, and our 20th anniversary event.

🙏 A big thanks to everyone who has supported us and helped make this all happen. If you celebrate Christmas, we wish you a brilliant holiday season. We look forward to working with you all in 2026!

📢 Big news: today the government has released a new plan about how, together, we can all get involved in tackling climate change and protecting nature. It also summarises the great work that’s already being done by charities, communities, businesses and central and local government.

Three things we’re especially excited about the plan at Climate Outreach:

1️⃣ A new Youth Climate and Nature Council giving young people a front seat in shaping government policy.

2️⃣ An annual ‘Energising Britain event’ to get people together who are doing brilliant things, so they can inspire and learn from each other. There are so many excellent initiatives happening up and down the country, but many people don’t know about the progress that’s being made.

3️⃣ The plan to commission more work about fairness in climate policy. Climate Outreach has done work like this before, and we hope to be able to feed in to these new insights.
