Oxford Theatre Guild presents Leave It to Psmith

We’re bringing Ian Hay and P. G. Wodehouse’s sparkling comedy to the Oxford Playhouse, 2nd-5th May 2027, directed by Dawn Taylor and Vicky Wild

Set in a glamorous 1920s world, this witty comedy features mistaken identities, romantic entanglements and audacious schemes.

WE’RE BUILDING OUR VILLAGE!

We’re looking for people to join us both on stage and behind the scenes. We’re particularly keen to hear from people interested in helping create the show’s visual world, with opportunities across set and costume design, lighting and sound, stage management, production and publicity.

Everyone is welcome, whether you’re an OTG member or completely new to the society. And you don’t need to have decided yet how you’d like to get involved.

Congratulations to our remarkable cast and crew, and a special thank you to our production team, whose creative skills and hard work brought Liz Lochhead’s haunting exploration of Mary Shelley and the creation of Frankenstein to life. From the intricate, beautifully stitched set to the technical details that transported us between worlds, so much work happens behind the scenes to make theatre magic happen. We see you and appreciate you!

MyViewFromTheStalls praised Becky Hughes’s nuanced portrayal of Mary Shelley, tracing her journey from naive teenager to regretful widow, and highlighted Emily Hemphill’s Elise as a standout character a “reality check…as she delivers subtly scathing lines with an authentic French accent…unleashing pockets of knowledge in barbed comments which had a real impact.”

Do you have a passion for theatre, and have a methodical approach to financial management?

Would you like to play a key role in supporting one of Oxford’s largest and longest-established theatre companies?

Oxford Theatre Guild, Oxford’s longest-standing non-professional theatre company, is seeking one additional trustee to join our board of trustees, taking over as Treasurer in 2027.

Our board of trustees comprises a chair plus 6 elected members and up to 4 co- opted members, acting as the management committee.

OTG’s finances are healthy, with an annual turnover of c. £70k and healthy cash reserves. The treasurer’s duties include reporting to the committee on the financial position at monthly committee meetings managing the overall budget for the organisation, including proposing budgets for each production (to be managed by production managers) working with our paid accountants to produce annual accounts, and present them to the AGM assisting the chair with contract management defining and maintaining finance related policies and procedures running day to day banking and book-keeping tasks with support from other volunteers where appropriate and the other usual tasks of an honorary treasurer, including leading on compliance with charity law, and liaising with the Charity Commission on an annual basis.

As trustee, you will have the opportunity to influence the direction of the charity, and support the exciting productions and other activities.

The position offers an opportunity to build and enhance financial management practices and systems and skills.

You don’t need to be a qualified accountant or have previous experience as a charity treasurer. We’re looking for someone who has an attention to detail and systems thinking!

The committee meets approximately once per month (either online or in Oxford) and the role in its current form takes around 5 hours/month of work outside meetings.

Meet the Voice of the Creature

In Blood and Ice by Liz Lochhead, Mary Shelley is haunted by the figure who will become the creature in her yet-to-be-written novel, Frankenstein. As the boundaries between imagination, memory and nightmare begin to blur, the Voice of the Creature becomes an unsettling presence, drawing Mary towards the story that will change literary history forever.

Although Greg won’t appear on stage, his voice plays a vital role in bringing this haunting presence to life helping create the atmosphere and tension at the heart of this tale.

This marks Greg’s debut with Oxford Theatre Guild and his first voice-only role, an experience he’s thoroughly enjoyed exploring in rehearsals. His theatre credits include performances with Rumble Theatre in Reading, including Matilda the Empress, The Royal Burial and Julius Caesar, as well as more recent work with Progress Theatre in Titus Andronicus and two short comedic plays.

Meet Elise

A Swiss maid in the household at the heart of Blood and Ice by Liz Lochhead, Elise offers a glimpse into the world surrounding Mary Shelley and the events that unfold as Frankenstein begins to take shape. With her own perspective on the household and its colourful inhabitants, Elise forms part of the vivid world that brings this fascinating period of literary history to life.

For actor Emily Hemphill , this marks her first production with Oxford Theatre Guild, following the completion of her foundation course at Oxford School of Drama. A refreshing new role for her, playing Elise has given Emily the opportunity to explore a different style of performance and revisit her French-speaking skills while developing the character’s accent.

Having previously enjoyed performing in comedy and musical theatre, Emily has relished the opportunity to take on something new with this production. With her sights set on further drama training, this is an exciting next step in her acting journey.
