A huge thank you to our friends Rapid Relief Team UK who joined us at the Horton General Hospital earlier this week.

This was in support of A&E Appreciation Week, a UK wide initiative launched by Rapid Relief to honour the hard work and dedication of those who work across our Emergency Departments (ED).

The Rapid Relief team spent the morning providing refreshments and treats to those working across ED, and we can confirm it went down a storm!

Our charity was pleased to help support and facilitate this visit, as we know how small acts of kindness like this, can make a real difference to staff.

Our thanks to all those who joined us, and a huge thank you to all staff across the Horton General Hospital for everything that you do!

We're pleased to share that our NHS Trust has expanded its oesophageal cancer service at the Horton General Hospital, supported by the introduction of specialist equipment funded by our charity.

Patients with confirmed oesophageal or stomach cancer can now undergo ‘staging laparoscopy’ at the Horton, whereas previously the procedure was only available at the Churchill Hospital.

The keyhole procedure takes place under general anaesthetic, and a small camera is inserted into the abdomen to assess whether cancer has spread.

The results determine the ‘stage’ of the disease, to help plan the best possible treatment for each individual.

Thanks to a reorganisation of the service and £153,000 of funding from the charity for the new equipment, day-case patients can now be offered the procedure more quickly and for some, closer to home.

A big thank you to all the charity supporters who helped make this happen and of course the fantastic NHS staff.

This weekend, over 100 amazing runners will take part in the Oxford Half Marathon for Oxford Hospitals Charity. Many are running to say thank you to the NHS staff who cared for them or someone they love. 🏃🏽‍♂️🏃🏽‍♀️💗

Here is Andy’s story…
In 2024, Andy Jeffery, from Banbury, was admitted to hospital with a severe blood infection and serious complications that left him facing an uncertain future.

At 58, Andy was fit and active, regularly running 20 miles at weekends and having completed multiple marathons. But after becoming unwell following a day working in the garden, he was sent to A&E at Horton General Hospital.

Three days later, Andy’s condition deteriorated rapidly. He was bleeding internally and had developed a very serious blood infection.

He was transferred to the John Radcliffe Hospital, where he spent three months undergoing multiple procedures and an operation, cared for by Dr Cobbold and his team.

It was an incredibly difficult time, but Andy says the care and compassion of the doctors, nurses and porters on the gastrointestinal ward made an enormous difference. His family and friends were also a vital source of love and support throughout his recovery.

After discharge, Andy had to rebuild his strength from scratch. Through determination, patience and hard work, he gradually returned to running.

Now, two years on, he is taking on the Oxford Half Marathon to say thank you.

The outdoor play area at the Horton General Children’s Ward is looking its best this summer, with colourful flowers and lush green plants transforming the space into a welcoming haven for patients and their families.

Officially opened last September by the charity and made possible by a donation from local company Glazpart Ltd, the newly refurbished area features soft, level safety flooring, a basketball area, climbing frame, and plenty of seating.

Now, ten months on, the space has truly come into its own. The flourishing flowers and plants have brought it to life, while the seating area provides a peaceful spot where patients and parents can enjoy a quiet break away from the ward, with welcome shade on warmer days.

The fully accessible design means everyone can enjoy the space. Staff have even been able to take patients outside in their beds, giving them the chance to benefit from fresh air, sunshine and a change of scenery during their stay. 🌺🌼

Last week we were delighted to attend the Trust’s Annual Staff Recognition Awards and see many amazing NHS staff get thanked for the difference they make in our hospitals 🩷

One of the highlights was seeing the absolute joy on the faces of the Horton’s Oak High Care Unit team, who won the CEO award for Outstanding Performance 👏🏻👏🏿👏🏿

Nurses, doctors, pharmacists and support care workers came up to the stage to receive the prestigious award on behalf of the whole team.

Oak cares for some of the sickest patients in the Horton General, including those who are critically ill, have serious respiratory and cardiac conditions as well as some patients with dementia.

Sister Lucinda Milligan said: ‘We have had a lot of change in recent years, and we are all so proud of the multidisciplinary team who deliver compassionate excellence every single day to our patients. It has meant so much to us all to be recongnised with this award.”

“It really was a moment we all treasured. We were particularly pleased that Margo, who has been a nurse for 60 years, including 40 years at the Horton on our Unit, was part of the team up on the stage. Her life is one that has been dedicated to the NHS, so it was a night none of us will forget!”

Simon Crowther, Interim CEO at the Trust, said of the team: “Their openness to feedback has improved comfort, privacy and communication for patients and families, while their flexibility and shared ownership have strengthened patient flow and coordination across services. This is a powerful example of frontline staff driving meaningful improvement.”

The team’s genuine joy and excitement at winning the award was a very special moment indeed.

We’re sharing a great big thank you with the Morrison’s Foundation today 🎉

Their kind donation has funded a new medical treadmill for Cardiac Rehabilitation at the Horton General.

Megan from our charity explains: “The rehab team support many patients from across the Banbury area who have severe heart conditions. Having the right kit for clinically monitored exercise is really important as it helps to improve the heart function and stamina and is a key part of patient recovery plans. The Horton team are so thrilled with this new equipment and we’d all like to say a very big thank you to the Morrison’s Foundation for this very kind support.”

Our special thanks also to Denise, who had a heart attack last year, for allowing us to show the kit in action.
