This Learning Disability Week, we're proud to celebrate the brilliant, diverse ways people learn and to reaffirm our commitment to tutoring that truly works for every young person, in our Schools Plus programme. Our Schools Plus tutors take the time to truly understand each young person: how they think, what motivates them, and where they shine. Every session is built around the individual, making space for progress that is meaningful, confidence-building, and entirely their own.

This National Carers Week, we’re recognising the vital role carers play every day 💙!

Behind so many of young people we support, are families navigating challenges, change, and responsibility, often with incredible strength and resilience. At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we see how much of a difference it makes when young carers have dedicated space for themselves, time to build confidence, try new things, and connect with a trusted adult outside the home. That’s where our Big Siblings come in, offering steady support and one-to-one fun!

To all carers - thank you for everything you do.

This week is Volunteering Week and we want to celebrate our wonderful student volunteers!

We have chatted to and worked with dozens and dozens of students this year, eager to make a difference! We’ve placed you in roles ranging from online tutoring, to grant writing, to packing and sending off food parcels. Exciting!

Student volunteers have such a wide range of skills and abilities and our organisation wouldn’t exist without them.

Thank you, keep up the hard work this year, it never goes unnoticed!

Celebrating the incredible volunteers here at the Oxford Hub this Volunteer Week! 🌟

It’s Volunteers Week so right now we want to celebrate YOU, our wonderful tutor volunteers - on both our Schools Plus and Twinning programmes!

These incredible programmes simply could not exist without the dedication, passion and consistency of those who volunteer with us. The impact of 1:1 and small group tutoring time on a child’s confidence, academic achievement, and aspirations for the future is just enormous. We can say with confidence that it takes just an hour a week to change a child’s life because we have seen you do it.

Thank you so very much, and keep up the hard work!

Happy Volunteers’ Week 💙
This week, we’re celebrating the power of showing up. Our volunteers give just a few hours each month but the impact lasts far beyond that - offering consistency, encouragement, and new experiences that can make a lasting difference. Whether it’s a kickabout in the park, trying something new, or just being there to listen, it all adds up. To all our volunteers - thank you. You are changing lives.
If you are thinking about volunteering, this could be your sign.

This week, our Schools Plus tutoring programme returns with another Frequently Asked Question.

QUESTION: What sort of skills might I develop working as a volunteer tutor!

ANSWER: As a tutor you learn how to be empathetic, patient, quick-thinking, confident, organised and great at communication. It is also a great way to build better attention to detail and critical thinking as you adjust to your tutee, their needs and all the stuff they aren’t able to clearly communicate yet! All these skills are valuable and transferable, whether you’re interested in a career in teaching or not.

So to current tutors, look inwards, doe this resonates with you?
To potential tutors, get stuck in - what is there to lose!?
