GANDHIJI ‘Journey of Values’ - Second Session

Odanadi organised the second session of its Journey of Values series today, aimed at introducing children and young people to Mahatma Gandhi’s life, thoughts, ideals, and enduring human values.

Odanadi was thrilled to welcome Professor J. S. Jayadeva, a distinguished personality, writer, novelist, and founder of Deenabandhu, who is also a founding member of Shakthidhama.

During the session, he shared valuable insights into Gandhiji’s life and philosophy, inspiring the children to reflect on the importance of leading a life rooted in honesty, integrity, and ethical values.
Through his thoughts and reflections, he encouraged the children to understand how moral values can guide their decisions, shape their behaviour, and help them navigate every step of life with responsibility and compassion.

The session was an enriching opportunity for the children to learn beyond textbooks and reflect on the importance of values in everyday life.

GANDHIJI ‘Journey of Values’ - First Session

As part of the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations, Odanadi organised the first session of its Gandhiji – Journey of Values series today, an initiative to introduce children and young people to Gandhiji’s life, thoughts, ideals and enduring human values.

Odanadi was honoured to have Dr. S. Shivarajappa, retired Director of the Gandhi Study Centre, as the resource person. Through his thoughtful sharing, he helped the girls look beyond the pages of history and understand Gandhiji’s simple life, struggles, commitment to truth and non-violence, and the values that shaped his journey.

The session gave the girls an opportunity to listen, reflect and connect Gandhiji’s values to their own lives. It was inspiring to see them actively engage in the discussion and reflect on how values such as truth, compassion, simplicity and courage can guide everyday choices.

Odanadi’s children and staff, along with Directors Stanly and Parashu all participated in the programme.
It was a truly meaningful beginning to a journey of reflection and values, inspiring our children to carry these principles into their daily lives.

Odanadi continues to inspire us with their courage and determination to overcome the traumas of human trafficking and sexual violence.

A day of joy and belonging at Odanadi
today! The girls at celebrated ‘Kail Muhurtha’, a traditional festival especially meaningful to those who come from Madikeri.
It was a beautiful opportunity to reconnect with their culture and childhood memories while creating new ones together.
The girls actively participated by choosing and preparing their favourite dishes, sharing food, playing games and enjoying moments of laughter and togetherness.
For children living away from their familiar surroundings, celebrations like these bring a sense of belonging and connection. It was truly heartwarming to see them celebrate freely, make their own choices and simply enjoy being children for a change 💛

A beautiful day where culture met childhood, and tradition became a celebration of joy!

Research shows that almost a quarter of trafficking victims are re-trafficked, which is why it is so important for survivors to be well prepared for life outside of Odanadi. All the girls are provided with vocational training through the onsite beautician school, enabling them to learn a trade, build confidence and gain their own financial independence.

Recently a sudden spell of rain brought a joyful moment to Odalu, the boys home in Mysore, India.

The children creatively made their own paper boats and floated them in the rainwater collected around their home.
Their laughter, excitement and innocent joy turned an ordinary rainy day into a beautiful and memorable experience. Moments like these give children an opportunity to enjoy their childhood, express their creativity, and create happy memories together.

*Mangala comes from the Erava Adivasi tribal community, where life was once closely connected to nature and animals. After her parents, both agricultural labourers, disappeared, her search for them led instead to exploitation and trafficking.

“My father and mother were both agricultural labourers. Because the plantation owner scolded them, they left the plantation, abandoned us there and went away. They have still not been found. I too came searching for them.
I am not a city dweller. When my parents could not be found, someone sold me for profit.

Because of that, I fell into a bad situation. I hope that those who caused this bad situation of mine get punished as soon as possible.

I love trees and animals very much. I prefer to live that kind of natural life. I do not like the city life of struggling with hunger in a tiny three-by-six-feet space.

Thank you for creating an environment of my own for me.”

Thankfully today, her story is no longer defined by what happened to her. At Odanadi, Mangala has found safety and a place she can call home. Through trauma-informed counselling that honours her life experiences and culture, she is gradually rebuilding her confidence and rediscovering her dreams.
She is currently undergoing beautician training, equipping herself with skills for financial independence. We hope she continues to build a stable, fulfilling, and long-term future with our organization, surrounded by care and a community that believes in her potential.

The image of Mangala raising the national flag reminds us that freedom is more than a symbol. It is the right to live with dignity and hope, she reminds us that true freedom means every child can live without fear.

Every survivor’s journey is a testament to the power of compassion and collective action. Together, we can ensure that vulnerable children and young people are protected, empowered and given the chance to thrive.

The name of this hall is Jeevasangama, which means
‘The Confluence of Life’. It’s located within the boys’ home at Odanadi India in Mysore, India.

Here, the children practice yoga, Odanadi also organises various programs and events, such as community meetings and weddings.

Odanadi believes marriage establishes a supportive and secure family structure for survivors of human trafficking and sexual exploitation, enabling a fresh start in a protective environment.

This week Odanadi hosted a party in celebration of 37 years of rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration 🩷

For 37 years, Odanadi India has been standing strong against human trafficking and exploitation of women and children who have experienced unimaginable circumstances 🌸

But the fight is far from over. More awareness is needed, more action is needed. More people are needed to speak up and help create a world where no one is exploited or trafficked.

Here’s to 37 years of courage of survivors and the continued work needed to end human trafficking, every person who chooses to act can make a difference 🙏

Meet Blacky 🖤

He lives at Odanadi, but he’s more than just a visitor, he’s become part of the family.

One of the most fascinating things about him happens every time we water the plants. Instead of getting in the way, Blacky carefully moves around, so we like to think he’s making a path for the water so that every plant gets its fair share 🌱

Isn’t it amazing how nature has its own quiet ways of teaching us kindness?

Sometimes, the smallest acts can leave the biggest impression. 🌿💧
